Do Stop Leak Products Work? Do They Damage Engine Seals? Will They Destroy an Engine? Let’s Find Out

Image
It seems like every single problem-solver product at the parts store has some group of folks who say they will ruin stuff, don’t work, etc. And yet they sell jillions of bottles of this stuff each year. So when Project Farm decided they were going to test stop leak products, I was interested in finding out just how that was going to happen. These products claim to help stop leaks by conditioning seals and gaskets. They do this by making them swell up since they shrink over time. But do they do any damage? Can they really help your car out? Watch the testing and let us know what you think. Video Description: Stop Leak Products: AT-205, Lucas, Bardahl, Liqui Moly, Bar’s Leak, Lubegard, Hapco, Blue Devil, XADO, Seal Lube, CD-2, Justice Brothers, Wynn’s. Do “Stop Leak” Products Work? Watch This Massive TerraGator Wearing A Classic International Pickup Body Attack A Pull!

Image
The TerraGator is one of the cooler pieces of farm machinery out there. Developed in the 1960s and hitting the market in the early 1970s the massive three wheeled machines are known as some of the most capable in the world at spraying fields with liquids or applying dry products via a massive hopper and spreader. We have never seen one of these behemoths outfitted with a classic truck body but the one starring in this video sure has been. The telltale IH stickers and the shape of the cab doors tell us that this is an old International pickup truck body. The fact that is has been so nicely mounted on a chassis that normally contains a big tractor cab and other stuff means that the builder really took some time and care to get it right. So what is powering this thing? Well if it is stock (and we say that because of the Cummins sticker on it) there is a 598ci, inline seven cylinder engine providing the umph. The turbo diesel makes some 452hp at full song and creates a ground pounding 1,4

Listen To The Entire Big Sounds Of The Drags 2001 Album Here, Free! – Crank It Up!

Image
Fun fact to know and share. The first piece of drag racing journalism I ever had published outside of the New England Dragway newspaper was a piece I wrote about pro mods for Nitronic Research. While that site is long gone, the spirit and ethos of the place still lives strong among lovers of the sport. It was a wild, raucous place where the opinions flowed freely and boy were there lots of them. The guy who created the place and the guy who tried to keep the monkeys from flinging too much dookie at each other in the cage was Cole Coonce. Undoubtedly you have read some of his writings on drag racing, land speed racing, or life in general in either his books or the myriad of magazines that have carried his stuff over the years. Back in 2001 Coonce released an album called “Big Sounds Of the Drags 2001”. Carrying on in the great tradition of the 1960s “Big Sounds” albums that covered drag races, road races, and other events, this is a truly awesome thing to listen to. There’s lots of nat

The Mother, Jugs, and Speed 2WD Pulling Van Was Kind Of Awesome – Flip Top Body and Wheelies

Image
Many of you out there remember the 1976 cult classic film Mother, Jugs, and Speed. With names like Raquel Welch, Bill Cosby, Larry Hagman, and others, it was packed with some star power for sure. Based at an ambulance company, the comedy featured Cosby in the lead as “Mother” Tucker, the best ambulance driver at one of the warring companies. His Chevrolet van based ambulance was all kinds of tricked out with lights, custom paint, and more. In the time honored tradition of motorsports guys latching onto something with even the lightest bit of cultural relevance we have the Mother, Jugs, and Speed pulling van to show you below. The van is was cooler than the movie with a supercharged big block engine, flip top body and a full raft of functioning emergency lights, this thing was a show stopper. You will see it hooked and pulling below. The huge nose-up launches rules the school! Check out these videos of the Mother, Jugs, and Speed 2WD Pulling Van – The post The Mother, Jugs, and

Historic Promo Video: Chevrolet’s Promo Movie Selling Ram-Jet Fuel Injection for 1957

Image
What a world it must have been for a gearhead in the late 1950s. So much was happening with aviation technology, and car companies were innovating, inventing, and experimenting with stuff that would have been considered voodoo magic just years (or less) before. This promotional video selling the virtues of “Ram Jet” fuel injection on 1957 Chevy models is awesome. It’s a total sales pitch, and we ate up all ten minutes. History will show that lots of people ditched their fuelie setups for carbs and maybe this was an idea that outpaced the available technology of the day, but the old timers tell us that when the cars were running right, nothing could touch them. We can only imagine the terror that the idea of fuel injection struck into the hearts of people back then. After all, it was a long road to acceptance in the hot rodding community and this was AFTER the idea of fuel injection had been in cars for, oh, 50 years! The optimism alone in the voice of the narrator and the script he i

Dallas Autorama Photos: Check Out All The Cool Stuff That We Saw On Display

Here’s our seventh gallery of photos from Dallas Autorama 2023. If you missed any of them, use the link below to check them all out! (Words and Photos by Chad Reynolds) It was car show weekend in Dallas, because not only were there hot rods, muscle cars, customs, and trucks on display at Dallas’ Market Hall but there was also the Dallas Auto Show going on at the Convention Center. That show was full of new cars, which are cool, but not as cool as good old-fashioned hot rods. So my dad and I hit up Autorama to see what everyone brought and to take a bunch of pictures for all of you to enjoy. While there we saw some friends, bench raced, and drooled over lots of stuff we’d love to own. There were lots of muscle cars of course, along with plenty of classics, hot rods, customs, and trucks. Several car clubs were on hand with their own show areas, and there was no shortage of spectators either. With a bar on site, food vendors, t-shirts, parts, tools, and more, there was no shortage of wa

This McCulloch Promotional Film From 1961 Is Awesome And Stars The Late Don Knots!

Image
Everything about this video is awesome. From the sound of the angry McCulloch racing engines, the goofy coolness of Don Knots, the race footage shown, and the fact that it was made to help McCulloch hawk their short lived line of racing karts. Long known as an engine company McCulloch decided to offer complete karts and the experiment was a flop, leading them to go back and concentrate on the engine side of the business. Of course McCulloch wasn’t just building engines for karts, they were one of the largest small engines companies in the world and their founder Robert Paxton McCulloch is a gearhead legend. Yes, this was the same McCulloch that build the centrifugal blowers that appeared on lots of production cars in the 1960s. Yes, this is the same guy who founded Paxton superchargers years later, and yes, this company built more stuff than you can possibly imagine. Check out the coolness below! Press play below to see this sweet video from McCulloch featuring their race karts!

Video Perfection: Take A Look At A Screaming Formula 5000 Car From 1970 – Open Wheel, Small Block Perfection

Image
(Video credit: Clay Simon YouTube Channel ) –  We have gushed over Formula 5000, we have showed you old Formula 5000 cars on eBay, and we have even showed you old Formula 5000 video with James Garner in it but today? Today is the coupe de grace. This is modern video of a 1970 period perfect Formula 5000 car running around the race track. We found the video on the Clay Simon YouTube channel and it is a really nicely done, short piece that simply highlights the car. There is no crummy music, no snappy editing tricks, and nothing to get in the way of just soaking in what we believe is the coolest open wheel road racing class ever. The other thing on Clay’s YouTube page is a pretty amazing caption on the video. We’re going to publish some of it below and then show the link so you can go and read the rest of it. The video is a short one but you get the sound of a screaming, stock block 305ci engine that you will not soon forget. Here’s what Clay said: In 1966, though, SCCA created the Ca

In Memoriam: Dallas Jones, Owner Of Beech Bend Raceway

Image
We are saddened to report that Dallas Jones, the longtime owner and manager of Beech Bend Raceway Park, has passed on. He was 82 years old. On many a weekend throughout the year, we find ourselves arriving into the track early in the morning, usually before the crowds. More often than not, the scene is peaceful…dew on the grass, sun filtering through the trees, the track workers starting to put up the Christmas Tree and Broc, Dallas’s grandson, in the tractor laying down the rubber. We’ve grown used to Dallas walking around, keeping an eye on everything as the PA system is fired up, checking in to make sure that everything was going well. You could find him in the tower, or in his truck, or roaming around on a golf cart. He may not have been working the grunt jobs, but you had better believe that Dallas was fully aware of the pulse of Beech Bend whenever he was around. The man knew the track well…he had raced at Beech Bend in the 1960s and 1970s before together, with his wife Alfred

Small Tire Drag Racing – Highlights From The Titans of 10.5 At MoKan Dragway

Image
We dig small tire drag racing around here, and while there is much debate over what constitutes a small tire, they are all a 10.5 of some kind. In  the Titans of 10.5 series, it’s all 28.50 x10.50 or smaller and that sounds nice to us. In this cool video from Urban Hillbilly we’re going to see some great highlights from the Titan’s of 10.5 Finals at MoKan Dragway. Check it out, let us know what you think, and get out there and either do some racing yourself or go watch some action at your local track. How To Build A Channeled Hot Rod: The Working Man’s Model A Sedan Part 13 – Building The Transmission Crossmember

Image
Here’s installment number 13 in the channeled Model A Build. This episode is all about getting the structure ready and building a transmission crossmember. This is a super important piece because it not only holds the trans, but also is a major structure for the chassis. Model A Fords are cool hot rod projects and my favorite is a chopped Model A Sedan. While a Tudor is the preferred sedan, a Fordor is cool to me too. This project here is a Tudor so everyone who likes a two-door sedan Model A Ford will dig this one. It’s getting the chassis Z’d out back, the body will be channeled, and it’s going to be cool as hell. Mike from This Old Hot Rod has been on a bit of a break from his channel and has decided that this project here needs to find a new home so he can get back at it and build the project cars he really cares about. With that said, he does want this one to be done right so that someone else has a great place to start and he’s taking us all along with him. Check it out and le

Chicago Auto Show Photos: The Biggest And Baddest In The Country!

Here’s another great gallery from the Chicago Auto Show, but if you missed the previous photos we’ve got links for that below too! (Words and Photos by Jim Hrody) After being downsized for a couple of years, the 2023 Chicago Auto Show returned to two halls at McCormick Place. Electric vehicles and test tracks were everywhere. Sadly, corporate support was notably absent for several brands such as Audi, Cadillac, Jaguar, Lincoln, Mazda, Porsche, and a few others. However, the annual Supercar Gallery returned as it does every year. Local dealers showcased their wares behind a partition. On hand were a few variants each from Aston Martin, Lamborghini, Maserati, Bentley, and Rolls Royce. The signs next to most of these ultra high end vehicles advertised 0 to 60 times in the 4s. The one that stood out the most was the rebooted Lamborghini Countach. It had plenty of design cues from the original supercar, but with a price tag of almost $3M. We took a ride on six of the test tracks. First

High Steel: This 1970s Documentary About Mohawks Building Manhattan Sky Scrapers Is Incredible

Image
The year was 1916 and the event was the construction of the Hell Gate Bridge. It was this occasion that brought a significant number of Native Americans from the Mohawk Tribe to New York and gave rise to the legend of the Mohawk iron worker that helped to literally build New York from the ground up. During that early bridge construction, Mohawks tended to gravitate toward the most difficult and challenging of jobs, riveting. Impressing supervisors and other workers, the stories of the Mohawk iron men soon grew. When New York went on a building boom the likes of which the world had never see, the Mohawks were there as well. Often stationed 12 hours from home for weeks at a time, they erected the steel frames of the most famous buildings in the world and did it with a stoic confidence that was seemingly impossible to define. The Mohawk men were never impervious to fear but their managed it in a different way that made them seem invincible. Their work was speedy, accurate, and safe, whi

Video: Dave Marcus and Dale Jr. – A Fun And Awesome Conversation You Can Watch

Image
Of all the people I have been able to meet and interact with in the world of racing, Dave Marcus towers over the crowd. I got to know Dave when he was racing his stock car at the ECTA Meets we held in Wilmington, Ohio. The last truly great independent NASCAR racer, Marcus was as spry, funny, and fast as anyone ever remembered and he did it all with a smile on his face. That’s why this video is extra bad ass. In an era where he should not have been able to survive, Marcus did. He did it by sheer gumption, loyalty, and dedication to his car and his craft. The fact that Dale Jr. had him as a guest on his podcast says so much about both men that we can hardly stand it. Dale Sr. had a great relationship with Marcus and often used him as a test driver over the course of his career. The unlikely friendship was steeped in respect for each other’s ability and position in the sport. Jr. is keenly aware and respectful of the history of NASCAR racing and because of that, you can tell how much he

Watch Norm Day’s Insane Flaming Wreck At The 1986 NHRA Northstar Nationals In Brainerd, Minnesota

Image
If there is a more nightmarish scenario than being in a burning funny car that’s upside down I don’t know what it is. As you will see in this 1986 video from the NHRA Northstar Nationals, funny car racer Norm Day lived that literal nightmare and was saved by the bravery of safety officials and a fellow driver. So to set the scene, Day has crossed the finish line at about 250mph and the rods come out of the engine letting oil loose and igniting the whole program in to a speeding comet of hell. As the parachutes burn off and fire engulfs the whole car, Day loses sight of the race track and drifts left. He gets off the course and is making tracks toward a station where safety workers are. They all run for their respective lives. As the car skids sideways on the grass it kind of digs in and rolls, gently. It had lost so much speed that it just basically flopped onto the roof leaving Day no actual means of escape. Helmeted and suited racer Tim Grose made multiple trips INTO THE FIRE to ki

Holley Complete Accessory Kits For Ford’s 7.3L Godzilla V8 Are Simple And Straightforward

The Right Line: This 1960s British Motorcycling Film Is Spectacular! Trials, Grand Prix, Moto-Cross, Isle of Man

Image
Motorcycle racing is not exactly a burning passion of mine in the modern world, but I am fascinated by its history. This is especially true of the scene and the sport in Europe where it was and still remains incredibly popular. England was a large driver of motorcycle competition in various forms during a big part of the 20th century. The country had a load of companies making motorcycles so it only made sense that racing would help establish who was best. It isn’t so much the speed of the racing back then that has captured my attention but rather the variety of it. Did you know that motocross started in England? It seems pretty crazy but it did. A sport that we associate wholly with Japanese motorcycles was 100% a British creation and an outgrowth of the insane, slow-speed trials riding that once began on hillsides but has evolved into a closed course style of event with obstacles and incredible feats being accomplished by riders with cat-like balance and ability. Tibu-Gone: Watch These Guys Blow Up A Hyundai In Spectacular Fashion With Nitrous and The Rev Limiter

Image
Sometimes it is just fun to send a lowly, crummy car down the line in spectacular fashion. Whether something like McTaggart and his King of The Heap adventures or what these guys did, there’s an expiration date on all the stuff that has ever rolled out of an automotive plant. Sometimes that date is man made and sometimes it is just when the parts decided that enough is enough in everyday use. This little car never saw it coming and boy when it comes it comes in industrially violent fashion. So the caption on the video claims, these guys basically set this car on the rev limiter and just poured ALL the nitrous to it. Between the car running its guts out and doing it while being force fed the happy gas and the factory “soft touch” rev limiter working everyone knows it is just a matter of time before the inevitable happens. The moment comes when fuel in the intake is ignited and that also ignites the nitrous in the mix and the hood, at least parts of it, flies some 30ft out of the frame

Transmission Zen Time: This Guided Tour Of The Disassembly Of An All-Original 1970s Turbo400 Transmission Rules

Image
There’s nothing cooler than watching a master at work. Well, as the internet has discovered Richard at Precision Transmissions is one of those masters. The dude is an absolute genius with automatic transmissions and it’s so fun to both watch him work and also listen to him narrate the work as he does it. He’s got an easy going manner and all the knowledge one could possibly have in their head about transmissions. This video is great because it deals with a familiar topic, the classic GM Turbo400 three-speed automatic. It also deals with an all-original 50 year old example that has never been taken apart. This customer has a classic truck that he’s tweaking on and wanted the transmission done and a Gear Vendors added to the back for some overdrive fun. We have no idea how many miles are on this thing but as it comes apart, it sure seems to have been taken care of. There’s not a lot of excessive wear or damage to speak of so that’s a good thing. Richard is a bad ass because the way he

This 1971 Vintage Drag Video From Lions Is The Coolest We Have Ever Seen!

Lions Drag Strip is one of the most magical places in drag racing history. Accurate or not, many consider it the “best” drag strip of all time. That may be more of an emotional vote considering all of the historical figures and cars that competed there, but the place is certainly ensconced in the history of drag racing at a level few other tracks can even think about being. A large part of the Lions mystique is the fact that the place is long gone and will never return. If it were still operating today as a plodding entity, the way we look at it would be totally different. There is a romanticism at looking to the Lions strip in the 1960s and 1970s as the bell weather of drag racing. From the rise of gassers to the funny car “revolution” in the sport, lots of the action was taking place at Lions and people remember that….rightly or not. This video was claimed to have been shot in 1971 and it is really neat on multiple levels. There’s a wide range of cars, it is filmed from a down track

Seven Figure Barn Garage Find!! 1931 Duesenberg Model J!! 1 of 25 Built! Hidden for 55 Years!

Image
Holy crap! When was the last time you heard of a barn or garage find that was just one of twenty-five ever built?! Yeah, this is something truly special. I’m going to let Chad Ehrlich tell the story, cause it is awesome. Video Description: Our good friend Doug Pray at the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Company in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma got the call of a lifetime a few months ago! Everyone in the old car world has heard the stories of the car that was locked in a building 50 years ago and hasn’t been seen since! The “story” is always about how rare and valuable this particular car is and how it’s been there for years waiting to be discovered. As everyone in the old car world knows, those stories are very seldom true. Even when the car in storage does exist, we all know that the car in the “story” is almost Never as good as what the years of tall tales have made it out to be! For Doug Pray, this call turned out to be real!!!! A few months ago Doug got a call from a very nice lady and she tol

Iron Trap Model A Shop Truck: The Exhaust Is Too Loud! Building Baffles At Home From Scrap.

Image
The first drive on a new project is always nerve-racking and super exciting! It doesn’t need to go perfect to be awesome, but when things go right it certainly can be the thing you need to pull all the last little bits together to finish a project. Sometimes the little stuff is the stuff that takes forever to make a reality, so the test drive is good motivation. What’s funny though is that as you keep driving a new project, while getting the bugs worked out, stuff that didn’t bother you at first will as the project gets closer to completion. Things like an exhaust that is just a bit too loud to be fun. In this video, that loud exhaust gets a home brewed fix. This project is coming along and I can’t wait to see it done! The Model A Shop Truck project has been going hot and heavy for months, and the boys have really been making awesome headway on it, but it has never been this close to being a driver! Recent episodes of the build had headers being built, wiring getting done, a fuel sys

Screaming Mimi: Watch This Little Ford ZETEC Four Banger Wail Out 280 Naturally Aspirated Horsepower

Image
One of the reasons that hot rodding is so globally awesome is the fact that people around the planet have different stuff to work with and the end result is the same. That end result is more horsepower, obviously and that is what you are going to see here. The video below gives us a window to watch a little Ford ZETEC four banger wail out 280 naturally aspirated horsepower. The Ford ZETEC engine family has been around since the 1990s and while it has been refined and offered in some slight displacement variances, the basic bones have largely stayed the same. Being that the engines are popular and that the whole family of engines has been long-lasting, hot rodders have their hooks into ’em deep. A cool fact is that these engines were used in Ford’s first “global” car, the Mondial which was sold here as the Contour. It was that car that eventually lead ford into the One Ford concept and the globalization of their entire product line. The fact that the Mondial was sold everywhere means t

The Alfarrari Project: Some Intake Work, Radiator Work, An Expansion Tank, And Water Pump Delete. Sure It Will Cool!?!

Image
In these next three videos in the series you are going to see Jeff being stupid, Jeff fixing stupid stuff, him building an expansion tank for the cooling system, and then deleting the water pump from the Ferrari engine. I’m not sure what the logic is there, but I guess we’ll find out together! There is so much going into building this little hot rod, and every single part of it is custom. After all, there are no kits to do this kind of thing so you have to build it all yourself if you want to do it right. Watch and be inspired to get out and do more in your garage. This is a little car, and it still has lots of little things to fix on it, but Jeff is surely knocking them out. I am really digging this one and can’t wait to see how it all turns out. I found this project on YouTube and it has been going on for a couple of years now so we need to catch up! This is Jeff, and he builds cool stuff, and he decided that he wanted to build an Alfa 105, which I have no clue about, and stuff i

Check Out Jim Hrody’s Best Of 2022 Collection: His Favorites From All His 2022 Show Coverage

Check out Jim’s favorites from 2022! We’ve got a full gallery of all of them at the bottom of the page! (Words and Photos by Jim Hrody) It was suggested to me that I put together a list of my favorite vehicles from all the shows I featured here at BANGshift. Sounded like a great idea, so I found the two most interesting rides at each show, which was a tough task in itself since so many were worthy of landing on this list. First up, the Amboy Depot Days. Along one of the side streets was 1928 Ford Model A. At first glance, looked like it had a run-of-the-mill Flathead V8. But upon closer inspection, it had a Lincoln Flathead V12. In all my years of chasing car shows, I’ve never seen this done to a Model A. The second vehicle I picked from this show is an International LoneStar made into a pickup truck. A Class 8 pickup conversion is not something you see too often, if ever. For the next grouping, we’ll be revisiting the Appleton Old Car Show. Immediately, I was drawn to a 1935 (?)

Having Fun In 1991: Wild Combos, Interesting Cars, And Laughs At The 1991 NHRA Mile High Nationals

The NHRA top alcohol dragster category is cool because you can run either an injected nitro burning engine or one that is supercharged on methanol. That wasn’t always the case. In fact there were all kinds of wild combos that were used (with limited success) in the category and this broadcast from the 1991 NHRA Mile High Nationals featuring top alcohol dragster and top alcohol funny car features some of those combos. From the injected nitro burning hemi that also used nitrous to a dragster with twin nitrous injected Oldsmobile engines, a front engine car and more, this was wacky awesome and fun. The other thing that makes this broadcast great is Steve Evans and Don Garlits calling the race. They are loose, they are cracking jokes, and they are having fun. It feels like you are in the grandstands with them just watching the race and BSing while having a beer. From personal experience I can tell you that making the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series television shows with guys like Alan Reinh

How To Build A Channeled Hot Rod: The Working Man’s Model A Sedan Part 12 – Splitting The Wishbones!

Image
Here’s installment number 12 in the channeled Model A Build. This episode is all about splitting the wishbones which is a true hot rod mod that has to happen to set the ride height where you want it on a hot rod. Check it out and let us know what you think in the comments section below. CL
