5.0L Ford Cam Swaps: HOW MUCH POWER IS A 5.0L CAM SWAP WORTH? WHAT IS THE BEST CAM FOR MY 5.0L 302? 5.0L FORD EFI VS CARB

Image
Cam swaps are worth power in nearly every engine combo out there, but people sometimes question just how effective they are on small engines like the 5.0L Ford. Trust us, cubes matter, but even an engine as small as 5 liters can see big performance gains with the right camshaft. Check out the testing from Richard below and you’ll see! Video Description: CAN I REALLY ADD 30 HP, 40 HP OR 50 HP FROM A CAM SWAP ON MY 5.0L FORD? HOW WELL DOES A CAM SWAP WORK ON STOCK 5.0L HEADS? DOES A CAM UPGRADE WORK BETTER WITH ALUMINUM HEADS? WHAT INTAKE SHOULD I USE WITH MY CAM UPGRADE? HOW MUCH IS A CAM SWAP WORTH ON A MILD 302? HOW MUCH POWER IS A CAM SWAP WORTH ON A WILD 302? CAN I USE THE SAME CAM ON A CARBURETED AND FUEL INJECTED 5.0L? WILL I LOSE LOW SPEED TORQUE WITH A CAM UPGRADE? CHECK OUT THIS VIDEO WHERE I COMPARED THE STOCK 5.0L H.O. CAM TO THE COMP XE274HR CAM ON TWO DIFFERENT 302 COMBINATIONS (MILDER & WILDER, EFI CAN CARB). The post 5.0L Ford Cam Swaps: HOW MUCH POWER IS A 5.0L

God Speed: Iron Mike Boyd, Owner And Driver Of The Winged Express Fuel Altered, Has Passed

Image
Over the past couple of days, the nostalgia drag racing community has been reeling from the news that Iron Mike Boyd, owner and driver of the famed Winged Express fuel altered, has died. Mike started driving the Winged Express in 1994, after a series of drivers after Willie Borsch and then John Zendejas passed during its recreation. Both were slated to drive the car, but when they passed car owner Al Marcellus partnered up with Mike Boyd who would become the caretaker and driver of the Winged Express. Technically this was the 3rd Winged Express, but was as accurate and entertaining as could be. I had the pleasure of seeing the Winged Express run many times over my life, most often at the March Meet and California Hot Rod Reunion events at Famoso Raceway, and can tell you that it was always a riot. Mike Boyd channeled the late Wild Willie Borsch in every way, and I’m sure Willie was looking down and smiling each and every pass. Like Willie, Mike was a quiet guy, but he cared about the

Spray and Pray: This In-Depth Look At Using Spray Welding To Repair A Large Worn Shaft Is Awesome

Image
Videos like this make me happy. Why? Because they show someone who is truly capable, talented, and able to right the wrongs that sometimes happen with machines. In this case it is the repair of a large shaft used in some sort of industrial pumping program. A bearing chewed up the shaft pretty good and rather than replace it with another massively expensive one, the decision was made to have it fixed. The method the machinist will use to fix this is spray welding and it’s fascinating. Between the methodology of actually spray welding and all the prep before and after to make sure the work is done correctly and with the longest lasting positive effect, we love this video. Not a short watch, you can bust it into pieces if you want to. It’s not some droning boring thing, either. It’s long because the process and the execution of it has many steps and we get to see them all. If you love technology, repair, talented people with the right tools, and fun gearhead stuff you should watch this

New One On Us: Watch This Boat Make Repeated Pulls On A Prop Dyno – This Is Pretty Cool

Image
Well this is awesome and something that we really didn’t know existed. A prop dyno for boats is something we should have known about. Hell, if you have a hub dyno for cars and trucks why wouldn’t you have a prop dyno for boats. This video shows said prop dyno being applied to a killer hunk of aquatic hot rod that is packing a massive supercharged engine in its aft quarters. No, we not have the horsepower numbers but if this thing is making less than 1,000 to 1,200hp with all that blower on it we would be surprised. Making speed on the water requires incredible power. I have recently fallen down the historical rabbit hole of WWII PT Boats and their history is fascinating. They had three 1,500hp engine stuffed in them and they’d make somewhere north of 45 knots on the right seas. That’s a nearly 80ft long boat! This boat must be a real rocket with that engine and boy does it sound good. There’s something pretty weird about watching a boat run full throttle on land but we like it! Pre

The Days When Car Companies Staged Street Races And Used Them To Sell High Performance Cars Were Better Than Today (Video)

Image
This video is so good. So good that it makes me want to just grab every person that reads BangShift and say, “WATCH THIS…SO GOOD….SO, SO DAMNED GOOD!” I do realize that in doing that I would be violating laws and personal space on several continents, so it ain’t gonna happen but this is such a good damned video. What is so good about it? For starters it is a 1963 commercial for Chevrolet promoting the high performance (read drag racing) prowess. Instead of just yapping about how bad ass the W-motor in the car is, they go the extra mile and take their top shelf performance Impala with the hot 409, four speed, and cliff face steep gear ratio and put it up against the 1963 Ford Galaxie with its hottest engine, trans, and axle. The Ford is powered by a 406ci, tri-power topped, 405hp mill. Why was the Chrysler left off the ad? I think we all know the answer to that question. Like a lawyer asking a question he knows the answer to, racing a car they knew they could beat was the way this was g

The Army M520 Goer Truck Was A Go Anywhere Amphibuous Beast Born In The Heavy Equipment Industry

Image
The defense industry is big business in virtually every country on Earth, American included and there are lots of manufacturing operations out there that have ties to defense that you’d never expect and some that you readily would. Take the heavy equipment industry for starters. You may not think a dump truck or a front end loader have much to do with the military but you’d be very wrong. A perfect example of this was the M520 Goer truck that was actually built by Caterpillar and used for many years by the US Army. This thing was an overgrown and bad ass version of a scraper or a bottom dump construction truck that was amphibious, unstoppable, and highly effective in doing its jobs of taking people and things to places where other trucks simply could not. In the late 1950s the Army started to look at how they could get some of the benefits from large articulated Earth moving equipment into their program and they floated out some contracts for experimental vehicles to companies like Ca

Video: The Tucker Combat Car – The Other Forward Thinking And Inventive Vehicle Preston Tucker Developed

Image
About a decade before Preston Tucker’s venture into the world of mass producing automobiles, he had another idea that was about as forward looking, advanced, and interesting as his cars. That idea was known as the Tucker Combat Car or the Tucker Tiger. It was unlike anything any other person had developed in a fighting vehicle before, capable of making speeds of over 110mph, armed to the teeth with machine guns, and even packing a revolutionary roof turret that became the last living piece of the legacy of a vehicle that people were impressed with but no one bought. The Tiger was powered by a Packard V-12 engine and used a fully welded body, something that was pretty wild for 1940. No rivets were used in the construction of the thing and as such it was far stronger than other options that were available during that era. Its hull-like construction was literally decades ahead in its thinking and ability to deflect blasts and protect the people inside the vehicle. Some of the claims you

Classic Bristol Video: Watch Doug Foxworth Suffer A Blow Over At IHRA Bristol In 1993 – Crazy Story!

Image
Bristol Dragway is one of the most stunning drag strips in the world. The track that opened in 1965 and sits in a literal wedge between two mountains will be packed up with fans as it has been for years and years. This time, we’re checking out a video that was shot during the many, many years that the track operated under IHRA sanction. Back in 1993 top fuel racer Doug Foxworth suffered a massive blow over during eliminations and while he was unharmed, it was a rough ride. Weirdly, it would be Foxworth in the other lane about a year later when well known top fuel racer Jimmy Nix was killed in a wreck. But back to the video below. The footage starts with a crash, but not a blow over. The crash we see first is Foxworth running down the track next to California racer John Carey when Carey looks to suffer a tire failure at the stripe. He gets into Foxworth’s car and while Carney got the worst of it, Foxworth’s machine also go dinged. That’s why it is so surprising to see Foxworth’s Havoc

This 1980s Interview With Keith Black and Don Prudhomme Is Pretty Neat – Great History

Image
If you were wondering who the coolest person on Earth was recently, wonder no more. It is Don Prudhomme. The man is the epitome of cool. He’s got dough, he knows everyone, he was one of the best drag racers in history. You’ll see him at Bonneville, the US Nationals, the Indy 500, and riding around in the desert with guys like Tony Stewart and others apparently. It does not stop there, but we will. To cultivate this level of cool you have to work at it and Prudhomme did but not all on his own. Yes, some of his highest profile successes came as a team owner and racer but in his early days the kid who could drive better than all the rest was just that, a kid. Even then though, the gods of speed shone down upon him. It was the early 1960s when Tommy Greer, Keith Black, and Don Prudhomme teamed up and proceeded to beat seemingly most every dragster on planet Earth in the process. Their partnership led to a lifelong relationship between Prudhomme and Black and that is kind of what this vide

Pit Trike Build Part 4: Gas Tank, Chain, Brakes, And Testing In The Snow!!!

Image
Here is the latest episode in the pit trike build, so watch, laugh, and enjoy cause this thing is fun. If you missed any of the previous videos, use the link below to watch. Having a pit vehicle at a race is a must-have nowadays. Sometimes that is the way you are required to get the car to and from the racetrack, but other times it is just so that you can get around easier in the pits and such. After all, a lot of the race tracks we go to nowadays are huge, and walking around might be fine if you are just spectating, but not if you actually have racing to do. So when we saw this cool little project going together for Sick Week we had to share it. And don’t for a second think this is some ultra trick build, this is a fun style project going together in the garage and while there is a bender involved that’s really the only fancy tool and you could build yourself the same basic thing without one, with a cheap roll bender from Harbor Freight, or by having a friend with a bender make you

Vice Grip Garage Does Sick Week: Day 5 – Independence Chevelle Runs 9’s And The Monte Gets Some Nitrous On Top Of The Blower!

Nitrous baby!!!! The Independence Chevelle is going all out and the Monte gets some spray on top of the small block with the mini blower. What could possibly go wrong? Watch. Derek and the Vise Grip Garage crew showed up at Sick Week in Florida to have some fun and to put the Chevelle and Monte Carlo through their paces. We talked with Derek in the line for tech and several times during the week and can tell you that he had some adventures, and some carnage, but had an awesome time as well. As usual, Derek was smiling and laughing and that’s why we like hanging out with him. We’re going to show you all his adventures for the week, but if you missed any videos from Sick Week you can use the link below. Part 2: Iron Trap Blown Flathead Powered Jalopy Shop Truck Build

Image
Here is the second segment in the shop truck build and it really is starting to look like something. The axles are going together, which is taking some work since this thing is being built from extra parts they have laying around, and more. I am excited to see this project come together. Check it out. The more I watch Iron Trap videos the more I want to build a 1920-1940 hot rod. They seem so simple and bare-bones if you want them to be and that means that you can put one together pretty quickly if you have the right parts and pieces laying around. Since the Iron Trap gang does, this cool shop truck project should be pretty simple and straight forward for them to get up and running. It’s especially nice since it is going to be a shop truck and not something that has to be super clean and finished when done. That doesn’t mean it won’t be cool though! Check out video one of this project. There is more to come and you’ll dig it. CLICK HERE IF YOU MISSED PART 1 OF THE BUILD Video Descr

Epic Barn Find: Historic 1957 Corvette Custom Show Car Dug Out After 57-Year Hibernation

Image
Barn finds are nearly always cool as hell, but range from super exciting to frustrating as well. I say this, because sometimes it is so annoying to find that something has just been sitting, for no good reason, when there was nothing major wrong with it. We see this all the time with barn find cars and trucks that were just “parked”. This Corvette is a little bit that way. It was only a few years old, with relatively low miles on it, when it was fully customized and then parked after just one show. At some point it came back apart for more work and was then just left. I can’t imagine a good reason for doing that, but I’m sure glad it has been found and shared with the rest of the world again thanks to Jerry Heasley who helped the owner get it uncovered, onto a trailer, and down to the Grand National Roadster Show in Pomona for it’s return to the same show, originally held in Oakland, that it had made its debut at so long ago. This is cool video, of a btichin ride that is coming back

Watch People Get Sandblasted And Their Stuff Get Wrecked By Jet Wash – They Are Not Smart

Image
This is the famous beach on St. Maarten where airplanes come in a couple of dozen feet above the heads of beach goers. The inverse of this moment is when the planes take off. The jumbo jets deck the engines and all of the massive jet wash hammers the throngs of people on the beach like crazy. This is literally insane. This is likely a popular thing to do, to stand in the wash of a massive jet as it spools up its turbines to get ready for a charge down what is probably a short runway. If you have spent any time in airplanes you have likely participated in this fun before. The captain stands on the brakes, gives the throttle hands the old “what for” and then you go rocketing off into the wild blue yonder. Behind the plane? There shouldn’t be anything behind the plane, especially people. This group gets blasted by sand, things are flying everywhere and so aren’t people. Dozens of these maroons gets blown into the ocean like leaves. We’re not sure what the hell the fun in this is but per

Watch Some Of The Earliest Hornsby Tracked Vehicles Known To Man In Their Earliest Tests Circa 1908

Image
Many people do not know that the “chain track” was invented in England. The Caterpillar company which was a combo of the Holt and Best tractor companies did not invent the technology but they did help to advance it. The “chain track” was first executed by the R. Hornsby company of Grantham, England and in this video we see a couple of their earliest vehicles being tested over a variety of surfaces and places. We’ve told you about the Hornsby steam crawler before  but the cool thing here is the fact that this is video of them actually working. The first vehicle we see and the one we see the most of has the appearances of a car that’s rolling on tracks. It is shown with two guys cruising in it, pulling a trailer, and climbing over all manner of things. Hornsby first concentrated on oil powered machines and later graduated to massive steam powered units. The company would be belly up about six years after this video was made and eventually they sold the rights to the track system that th

This 1980s IHRA Factory Modified Video Pays Tribute To A Bad Ass And Short Lived Class

Image
Sometimes people think that drag racers fall out of the sky. People with piles of money that just magically appear with a car to compete in. Those people are morons. Everyone who has ever done a damn thing in this sport has gotten their spot with blood, sweat, and tears. This video, which serves to highlight an IHRA Factory Modified showdown in Dallas, really lays out the class perfectly. For lack of a better term this was a no-holds barred version of pro stock with tiny small block engines. As you will see in this video, there was loads of talent populating this class and some of that talent is still racing today. Current pro mod racer Rick Hord is profiled and Tim Freeman of the KB Racing pro stock team is showed as a talented teenager. The IHRA’s Bret Kepner and drag racing legend Jon Lundberg bring the action from this awesome event and the sound in itself is a show. The cars leave the starting line at more than 10,000 RPM and the majority of them did it off of a clutch pedal and

The Chainsaw: Early RX-7 Plus Snowmobile Engine Equals Fun…And Tinnitus!

Image
“Well, that was a dumb idea, wasn’t it?” Forget trying to make me feel better after I botched a jump, separated from my dirt bike and augured into the ground like a 160-pound lawn dart. Or that I looked like I had smacked a Japanese Giant Hornet nest with a whiffleball bat but was also stained from head to toe in the juice of a thousand blackberries and that I smelled both earthy and dessert-like. Or that there was a momentary lapse of judgement the second the decision was made to throw a jellyfish at a sibling’s head a tenth of a second before my brain had the chance to find the note card that said, “…but it can sting you, too!” In an age where every boo-boo warrants a trip to the local urgent care clinic and every mistake is a catastrophy, there was that one simple line to smack you upside the head verbally. You had to reflect after that one.  Was it dumb? It seemed like a good idea at the time… Our buddy Kevin is human. Humans make good decisions and bad decisions…that’s just part

Road Course Dice! Watch Two Historic BMW 3.0L CSL Batmobile Coupes Beat On Each Other At Daytona

Image
It is pretty rare to see a single 1973 BMW 3.0L CSL anywhere but to have a pair of them literally racing door handle to door handle in the heat of battle is absolutely awesome! This footage comes to us from our pal Craig Sutherland and it was taken during the Classic 24 Hour event that was held a couple months back at Daytona. The race draws the coolest vintage road racing equipment in the world and when a pair of cars that are both worth well into the millions of dollars get driven like they are stolen, you KNOW it is a good show. For those of your unfamiliar with the BMW 3.0L CSL it was a hot rodded version of the BMW CS road car. The L stood for “light” and in the fine tradition of factory built race cars in every genre, there was plenty of aluminum that replaced steel to get weight down, a wild aerodynamic package (where is where the Batmobile name comes from) and more horsepower than the standard factory model as well. The cars were immediately competitive in touring car and endu

Putting A Dragy In A Top Fuel Dragster: Clay Millican Takes The Dragy World Record From Lyle Barnett!

Image
It wasn’t as easy as you might think, but Clay Millican and his crew finally got their Dragy to work in their Top Fuel Dragster. If you aren’t familiar, the Dragy is a performance meter that works through very precise GPS unit that you mount in the car, and an app on your phone which also has to ride in the car. If you own a Dragy you can track your best ET and Speed in comparison to the rest of the world and until this run by Clay Millican, nobody had been quicker and faster than Lyle Barnett in a Pro Mod. Unfortunately for our boy Lyle, Millican kind of owns the deal now. Check it out in the lastest video from Clay and crew. NHRA Winternationals Photos: Big Tire Door Cars Running The Full Quarter Mile!

Pro Stock is some of the tightest drag racing in the world, and we love it. This is what door car drag racing is all about. (Photos by Wes Allison) Our NHRA Winternationals photo coverage continues right here with nothing but drag racing action. Drag And Drive Ignitions For All: MSD’s Single Channel Pro 600 Ignition Provides Race-Ready Spark When You Need It

Image
Running in the 5’s and 6’s on the dragstrip isn’t hard with the right equipment, but doing that AND driving the car hundreds of miles a day for a week is a whole other thing. One of the big challenges is enough ignition to fire all that fuel under boost on the track, without burning up all the other components on the street. Putting race levels of spark energy through spark plug wires, spark plugs, distributor caps, etc isn’t an issue in short bursts but if you put that level of electrical energy through them for hours at a time something usually gives. But what if you could flip a switch and change from super high power for the track and then to lower power for on the road duty? If that sounds like magic to you, then welcome to the magic show because MSD has done just that with the new Pro 600 Single Channel ignition. Here’s all the info from MSD. Watch A Beautiful Failure Run Up The Hill At Goodwood – The Ferrari 712 Can-Am Car Was A Light Hitting Legend

Image
This car is powered by the biggest engine that Ferrari ever made and it never won a race. The Ferrari 712 was the company’s answer to the question surrounding how it was going to attack the wide-open and worldly popular Can-Am racing series of the early 1970s. They built a chassis and then for the power plant they went all in, creating a 7.0L version of their V12 engine. The good news is that the car looked and sounded like nothing else on the track. The bad news is that most of the other stuff on the track passed it and never looked back. Mario Andretti mustered a fourth place out of the car once and that was kind of a career highlight for the machine that just didn’t have the hairy chest that the other cars in competition did. Now, that being said this thing is so sexy in visual and audio that watching it hike up the Goodwood hill is special and cool. The open cockpit, the mile-wide footprint of the car, and the lower toned sound of the 7.0L V12 that was so much bigger than the typi

Polyester Perfection: Watch The 1977 NHRA Summernationals Right Here – Big Names, Big Heat, Big History

Image
This weekend for the 49th time in NHRA history there will be a race run carrying the title of the Summernationals. The first one was run in 1970 at York US 30 Drag Strip in Pennsylvania. In 1971 the race moved to Raceway Park in Englishtown, New Jersey. In 2002 the title transferred to Topeka, Kansas and then finally it came back home to reside in New Jersey from 2013 until the untimely closing of the track before the running of the 49th iteration of the event. Well, Indy will now join the list of tracks that have hosted a Summernationals as this weekend’s Lucas Oil Summernatioals will begin roaring on Friday with testing. This video is the 1977 broadcast of the race and it’s radical for all the reasons you know and love. The cars, the names, the hot, hot New Jersey weather all combine to make this a barn burner of a race. The 1977 NHRA season was a good one with Shirley Muldowney ultimately capturing one of the most historically significant motorsports championships in American histo

This Video From The 1957 12 Hours of Sebring Grand Prix Is Completely Awesome – The Cars!

Image
Here’s a pro tip. If we ever see a video that features an amazingly beautiful 1957 Chevrolet convertible towing an MG race car down the highway, we’re featuring that thing. Such is the case of the interesting and frankly fantastic video below that was made to feature the 1957 12 Hours of Sebring Grand Prix. Sebring has always been a big deal but its importance in the exploding segment of sports car racing int he 1950s cannot really be overstated. If you were a sports car racing fan and you wanted to see the best cars and competition in the world, you hauled your ass to Sebring by any means necessary. What’s interesting about this video is the fact that it is not just a straight up race coverage film. You actually follow a racer through the whole process of getting to the race, competing in the event, and all the stuff in-between like tech, a physical, etc. The whole setup is pretty funny with the guy talking his wife into taking a trip to Florida that she receives to be a second honey

Here’s What It Looks Like When A Peterbilt 379 Lays Down 1,665hp On The Dyno Rollers

Image
Every spring the guys at Antrim Diesel in Pennsylvania host a dyno day where their customers and other diesel soaked enthusiasts show up and run their stuff on the dyno. The major difference? This is a dyno day/competition featuring some of the gnarliest, most worked up big rigs known to man. In this video you will see a Peterbilt 379 that was built/tuned by PDI Diesel laying down 1,665 hp on the monster dyno at Antrim Diesel. While we do not know the specifics on this truck, consider what the driveline losses must be to turn the huge axles and transmissions that these trucks have. Normally us car guys talk about a 20% loss from front to back on a dyno, right? What is it on a big rig? More? The same? Maybe you guys know better than us. If we go with the standards 20% loss, this is a 2,000hp street going rig that could tow not only a trailer of stuff but the entire warehouse that stuff came from of the rest of the rock quarry the material was pulled out of. Oh…and the soot. When the dr

So blame this blog item on spending too much time in hotel rooms. While I don’t seek the show out at home, I somehow manage to stumble upon the wild documentary style television program, “ Life Below Zero”  on nearly every trip I go on. This show follows the lives of several people who live in inhospitable conditions around the Arctic circle. This isn’t a happy go lucky look at “roughing it”. This is a pretty unflinching look at people subsisting on their own smarts, strength of will, and guile in an environment that would pretty much kill the majority of human kind in the modern world who don’t have the knowledge of living off the land these people have. Their lives are a constant battle of finding food, maintaining their shelter, and planning for winter. And winter is scary as all hell. One of the people that the show focuses on is Sue Aikens who lives in a place called Kavik which is in northern Alaska. Sue has a hunting/fishing camp that she operates for a few months out of the ye

Watch A Vintage Dodge Big Rig Make A Full Pull With Detroit Diesel Power! Slow-Mo Wheels Up Action!

There are not many old Dodge big rigs left on the road. They were pretty limited in quantity to start with an when you take into consideration time and abuse, you can see why their numbers are so small. Thankfully, at least one has been restored and converted into a big rig puller. This truck, a late 1960s model (we think) is powered by a Detroit Diesel engine. To us it sounds like an 8V92, but we’re guessing. That famous two stroke wail is present and accounted for as the truck slowly claws at the Earth and pulls the sled virtually all the way off the end of the course. We dig looking at it with the front end a couple fee in the air and both rear axles continue to be planted on the ground. The truck is called the General Lee because what else would you call an old Dodge big rig pulling truck! It appears to have been fully restored with a detailed looking frame, nice Alcoa wheels, the big chrome stack in the back, and the red paint on the cab looks relatively fresh. All we know is th

When the A.O Smith company of Milwaukee, Wisconsin decided to get into the car business by building a very cheap form of transportation we’re not sure they were aiming to build the cheapest car in the history of the world but that is exactly what they did. By the time that the last of these babies rolled off the line (then being produced by the Briggs and Stratton company) the sticker price was between $125 and $150 bucks. Going on the fact that we’re all cheapskates here and that we’d have needled the seller down to that $125 price, that equates to $2,091.88. You’d be driving off the lot on a vehicle that did not have a body, did not have suspension, had a top speed of around 30mph, had very little in the way of braking, and gave you zero hope of survival in the event of a crash. Oh, it also lacked a clutch or a throttle. But the reality is that you’d have to spend a whopping $5,721.29 in today’s cash ($380) back then for a 1922 Model T runabout which, well, which looked like the spac
