Thrill! This Video Is The Opening Of The Awesome Eddie Hill Story Video Dean Papadeas Made In The 1980s.

Image
Eddie Hill laid down one of the greatest, and arguably the greatest lap in the history of drag racing in 1988 when he ran 4.99 seconds at the Texas Motorplex. His “nuclear banana” dragster was the most feared machine in the land. Of course many people miss the fact that this run was made at an IHRA event, not and NHRA event but that’s a footnote. This video is the beginning of the Main Event Video “ Thrill! The Eddie Hill Story” . The video was produced by Dean Papadeas who revolutionized the way drag racing was filmed by swooping his camera over the cars and quite literally changing the entire look of the sport on television. In this two minute clip you’ll see the historic 4.99 lap, and some great footage of Eddie Hill, his wife Ercie, Fuzzy Carter (his crew chief), and the rest of the cast and crew of the Hill operation. The opening of this video is totally freaking awesome. Press play below to see the “nuclear banana” and one of the most legendary drag racers (on land and water!)

All Bolts Are Not Created Equal: This Comparison Between ARP Stainless Bolts And Typical A2 Stainless Bolts Is Interesing

Image
When it comes right down to it, there are a few things you can spend more money on and KNOW you are getting a better product. ARP Fasteners are on that short list. The company has blazed trails in high performance fasteners to places others have not even dared to dream about yet and they continue to do it week after week, year after year. This comparison between ARP stainless steel bolts and typical A2 stainless steel bolts is pretty fascinating. Not because of graphics, fancy camera work or anything else, but because of the superiority of ARP fasteners over the A2 stuff that people buy because it is cheap. When it comes right down to it, with ARP you know where it is coming from (the USA), you know what it is made of (the best materials), you know the production process is top shelf (all done in house with QC checks, monitoring, and patented manufacturing procedures), and you know the results you’ll get when using their product right (no failures). That just begs the question. Why w

Awesome Video: The Story Of British Rally Hero Dave Kedward And His Audi Quattro Group B Beast

Image
This is a spectacular video. The story of a kid who started working in a butcher shop and all the while taught himself how to weld, wrench, and even paint cars during his off-time. Eventually he gets good enough at it to ditch the meat market and make cars his life. From that point Dave Kedward went rally racing and he competed all over the world. Through that career he crashed, he won, he traveled, and he honed his skills. He also got the bug for someday owning a Group B car, the most fearsome class that has ever existed in rally racing. “Driving a Group B car has to be like being on drugs…” To see the tour of the car, to hear the car on the course, to understand the insane lengths that engineers went to nearly 40 years ago to compete and win is amazing. This car is wild and even if it was built today it would still be wild. The experimental things that Audi engineers did back in the 80s are amazing and during the walk around he shows us the highlights. You can’t help but to really

Historic Drag Video: NHRA Greatness At Green Valley Raceway In Texas Circa 1965

Image
We’re kicking off the day with some spectacular footage from the 1965 NHRA Spring Nationals race at Green Valley Raceway in Texas. This footage has gas and fuel dragsters, gassers, early funny cars, and even Bob Sullivan in his blown, fuel burning Panedmonium Barracuda, a car we don’t think we have ever seen actually running at full steam on video. Green Valley was a neat place. Opened in 1960 and running all the way into the middle 1980s, the track was located outside of Fort-Worth and actually stood toe to toe with one of the more ill-fated strips ever built, Dallas International Raceway. The tracks even ran on the same weekends back then, effectively entering into war with each other. Green Valley survived about a decade longer than the “modern super track” that seemed poised to snuff it out of business. There are loads of different classes shown here. The backup pickup, and even the early match bash style funny cars that were exploding in popularity at the time. If those cars loo

The Mark Smith Estate Sale: Largest 3 Day Estate Sale In Years!! – 350 Cars & 700 Pallets of Parts!!

Image
It is sad when an old hot rodder dies, but when the parts and cars they have collected go on to live with new friends, new families, museums, etc, at least we know that their passions will carry on. Such is the case with Mark Smith, a man whose collection of cars and parts is legendary. When he passed away last year, his collection was destined for new life, and Matt and Mike from Iron Trap made sure they were there to purchase some great stuff during his estate auction. Video Description: Mark Smith had one of the larger car collections on the East Coast, that was mostly housed in Lynchburg, VA. Unfortunately Mark passed away last November leaving this massive collection behind. Mark did donate a large portion of his nicer cars to museums, and even gifted a few to friends. The remaining cars and parts were auction off this past week and it was one of the largest auctions we have been to in a few years. The auction was held over 3 days with over 700 pallet loads of parts and 350+ car

AACA Hershey Swap Meet, Car Corral, And Show Photos: Classics, Muscle Cars, Trucks, And More!

Here is our third gallery from Hershey! (Words and Photos by Joe Grippo) The full name of the event is the 67th Annual Antique Automobile Club of America Hershey Region Fall Meet, most just call it Hershey. Many others, including your humble writer, call it the greatest automotive event in the world. For 1 week each year in early October, tens of thousands of car fanatics descend on the grounds of the Hershey Amusement Park and the adjacent Giant Center stadium, with good walking shoes and hopefully deep pockets searching for that elusive ancient car part or next project. We were among them, though our pockets weren’t that deep. Hershey lore says walking each aisle of the swap meet and the car coral, would tally-up 29 miles of traveling. Hunting through nearly 9,000 swap meet spaces and close to 1,000 car coral spots can take some effort, but you have 5 full days to shop, so pace yourself. And then he sent them to us and I totally forgot about them! Yep, my bad all the way, but Jim reminded me that they were in the folder waiting and so here they are! The Drag and Drive event that started it all is still one badass event and thanks to Jim we’ve got some cool photos to share. The great thing is that there are a ton of photos from both the pit areas and the race track. While the on track action is always great, one thing that makes a Drag and Drive event something special is the fact that each competitor has to haul all their own stuff and that means pit areas full of parts, pieces, luggage, and more. (Words and Video by NHRA) LAS VEGAS (Oct. 28, 2022) – Brittany Force made the quickest run in each qualifying session on Friday at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, powering to the provisional No. 1 position in Top Fuel at the 22nd annual NHRA Nevada Nationals.   Robert Hight (Funny Car), Aaron Stanfield (Pro Stock) and Matt Smith (Pro Stock Motorcycle) are also provisional No. 1 qualifiers at the 21st event in the 2022 NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series season and the fifth of six races in the Countdown to the Championship playoffs.   Looking to sweep both races in Las Vegas this year and stay in the championship hunt, Force went 3.665-seconds at 337.24 mph in her 11,000-horsepower Flav-R-Pac dragster. That gave her the best runs in each of the two sessions on Friday as she looks to pick up her ninth No. 1 qualifier in 2022 and 41st in her career. She closed to within 77 points of leader Justin Ashley heading into final qualifying tomorrow, knowing she’ll need another big

Too much boost?? Too much RPM?? Understanding Starting Line Tuning With Peter Harrell.

Image
Let’s take a look at what causes traction issues on the starting line in turbo cars. Tuning cars for maximum power takes skill but tuning a car to leave the starting line with full power takes even more skill! Peter Harrell, of Harrel Engine and Dyno, is a bad ass when it comes to tuning race cars and he’s also a bad ass because he shares as much information about building and tuning engines as he possibly can. In this latest video,  Pete is sharing information on how to make a turbo car leave the starting line at the drag strip. It’s a fine line between spinning and bogging and getting that balance right means timing and boost have to be in harmony. So watch below to find out what Pete’s secrets are and how he uses them to make things really fast.   The post Too much boost?? Too much RPM?? Pulling Photos: North Carolina State Fair Tractor Pull Coverage Continues

David Whealon, our resident drag race, road race, and tractor pull photographer was at it again for his annual pilgrimage to the North Carolina State Fair, where the National Tractor Pullers Association puts on their final show of the season. Below is his write-up and his photos, and we’ll have even more as we go through the week! (Words and Photos by David Whealon) Well, we’re back on our yearly stop at the NC State Fair with some of the best NTPA pullers in the country showing up for their final exhibition of the 2022 season. The four-session, three-day event was packed slam full with competitors pulling in nine classes with two chances at the hook of go or blow nonstop action. For some it’s probably a good thing that they have all winter to pick up the busted parts and pieces and do what every racer is committed to do in the long offseason……get stronger for the next upcoming season. This show did not fail to disappoint any of the diehard pullin’ fans that took a break from all the

The Greatest Monster Truck Wreck Of All Time Involves King Kong, Fire, And Wrecked Cop Cars

Image
There are certain moments in a man’s life that he experiences once and then they stay with him all the way to the grave. Such is the video you are going to watch below that displays the most awesome and appropriate crash in monster truck racing history. What is so good about it? Firstly it came at a time when trucks were morphing from the lumbering giants that they first showed up as into more specialized racing vehicles. They were making this transition mostly based on the balls of the driver because the suspensions were still rock hard and rudimentary. Those suspension shortcomings led directly to the epic carnage shown in the video. It is important to note, as always, that the driver was A-OK and you’ll see plenty of footage of him being interviewed moments after his truck jumped a wall, killed an iconic 76 sign, and flopped over onto a pair of parked police cars and then burst into flames. The sequence of events in the crash is straight out of an episode of  The Simpsons.  Steve C

Historic Drag Video: Garlits Does England Circa 1976 — An Awesome Look At Big Daddy In The Mid-1970s!

Image
We never tire of finding old drag racing films and sharing them with you. Why? It is like bringing some history back to life. This time it is a two part video showing Don Garlits taking on all comers at Santa Pod Raceway in England back in 1976. It is our opinion that Don Garlits is the greatest drag racer who ever lived (and is still living BTW). He was a competitor at the first March Meet back in 1959, although it took him until 1964 to win the race, which always featured the strongest field of fuel dragsters in the country. In ’64 Garlits was part of the US Drag Team that went to England to show the folks in jolly ol’ what American drag racing was all about. The videos below show his second trip to the country, 12 years later, in 1976. The interviews and footage are great and show just how big a draw Garlits was during the height of his career. The place is absolutely packed and they’re all at the strip to see him. Note the area behind the starting line that looks like a covered

Ian Johnson Is Building Two Ford 9 Inch Center Sections, A Dana 60, And A 14-Bolt For Hard Core Crawler

If you dig off-road content then you have to know our friend Ian Johnson. Ian has done all kinds of fun off-road and fabrication tv shows over the years and is one hell of a resource when it comes to great tech. In this video, he’s doing 4 axles, including three different types in this one video. A Dana 60, two 9  inches, and a 14 bolt. What a variety! Watch the rebuilds, plus some fab work on his buggy, including the fuel cell, mounts, and a shifter. Video Description: This week I have to jump around a bit, I start by knocking out 4 axles for two different projects, then tackle the fuel cell and shifter on the Bomber. Halfway through the week the focus on my Camera went bad and I had to send it out for repair, but I did not notice until after I dumped all the footage. I had thought about just killing the video, but decided to post it anyway….sorry for some of the blurry footage. The camera is now fixed so you won’t see that in the future. Fall Carlisle Swap Meet Photos: Gassers, Classics, Hot Rods, Customs And More!

(Words and Photos by Joe Grippo) Autumn in my home state of Pennsylvania means two things to me, quick E.T.’s and Swap Meet season. With Hurricane Ian bearing down us this particular weekend, racing was off the table, so it was back to the Carlisle Fairgrounds for the Fall Carlisle extravaganza of parts hunting. Lighter crowd this year it seemed, but the place was still pretty packed, and prices were high, and deals were there but tougher to find. We went on just Friday of the near weeklong event, so it was an abbreviated trip, but we spied tons of cool stuff. The swap meet is always chock full of desirable vintage speed and hot rod parts, from wheels to intakes and various pieces of NOS goodness. Memorabilia continues to be immensely popular, and the prices bear that out. I noticed a uptick in vi

Hilarious GM Promotional Video From 1966 – How Chevy Bagged On The Red Hot Mustang With Corvairs, Novas, and Chevelles

Image
Chevrolet had to have been kind of panicked. Hey, they sere caught completely with their pants down in 1964 when Ford released the Mustang and created an icon right in front of them. By 1967 they would have a car to compete with Ford’s sensation and the Camaro would be a worthy opponent for many years, but what could they do before that? Chevy could try like hell to make you think the Mustang was the wrong car to buy and some of their stuff was better. Continuing on the western theme that the last couple of these videos have had, we are going to see a series of tests between  Mustang and a few different Chevrolet models. Specifically we’re talking about a Corvair, Corvette, a Chevelle SS396, and a Chevy II Nova super sport. From clawing up dirt roads to running down the drag strip, Chevy does their level best to prove that the Mustang is a car trying to be too many things to too many people. Want to be fast? It isn’t as fast as a Corvette. Want to be roomy? It is not as roomy as a Nov

Dreary Days: This Review of The 1982 Plymouth Reliant Is Pretty Depressing From Top To Bottom

Image
From the tone of John Davis’ voice to the weather the car was being driven in, to the actual car itself, this MotorWeek review of the 1982 Plymouth Reliant wagon is just a depressing look at what the automotive scene was in 1982. For starters, we’re fairly certain no human woke up in that era and said, “Can’t wait to get down to the local Dodge dealer and buy a K-car today!” People bought the K-cars on price and because they did, Chrysler survived. The machine was 100% necessary to save the company it just wasn’t an automobile people aspired to own. It’s was like you bought on because you had to, not because you wanted to. If you can believe it, this little wagon is touted as the “largest front wheel drive car for sale in America today…” and that’s pretty wild. If you are a normal sized human and have ridden in a Plymouth Reliant you know that there’s nothing big about it. From the anemic 2.6L Mitsubishi four banger to the brakes that just weren’t fantastic, the car here is exactly li

Building A Land Speed Race Car Part 11: The Tail End Of The Build

Image
Bonneville’s events were canceled this year because of rain, and so was the September El Mirage event. But that didn’t keep Matt from plugging away on the streamliner build, where the tail is the subject for this installment of the build. I found Matt’s smart ass voice over to be funnier than normal in this one for some reason, so watch and laugh as well. If you haven’t been to Bonneville to see land speed racing in person, and haven’t gotten to see what is really going on inside the streamliners that run 200, 300, 400, and even 500 mph then you are missing out at a lot of levels. One is the technology and creativity that is brought to the table at these events. This new streamliner project from FastMatt is one of those that you are going to want to check out, and thanks to his videos you get to see it actually coming together and we dig it. Check out Part Three of the build as he goes over all the challenges of putting a drivetrain in this race car here. Sometimes the engines, transm

An OVERLANDERS DREAM | Toyota Chinook 4×4 Conversion Project

When I saw this project going together it made me smile, because who hasn’t thought about having some cool 4×4 motorhome at one time or another? But if you really want to go off-roading, then your 4×4 motorhome is going to have to be something gnarly like a Unimog or other military rig, or you need something small and nimble. Like a Chinook! I remember these little Toyota rvs growing up and I think this project sounds like fun. They have been working on it for nearly a year, but we’re going to start off with the first two videos here and then we’ll catch you up in the coming weeks. Watch! Video Description: We did it! We bought our dream truck. This is going to be the rig we take on our Pan American adventure. We have a lot in store for this thing, so subscribe and come along for the journey!! YO! DISASTER AVERTED! FINNEGAN’S NEW FUEL PUMPS SAVE THE HEMI !

Image
Finnegan’s adventures with the Hemi in Blasphemi have been well documented and quite frankly kind of hard to watch at times. But I feel like this video might mean things are finally on the right track and that this bad ass ’55 Chevy might actually be fun once again for Finnegan. Check out the latest. Video Description: In this episode of Mike Finnegan’s Garage, we fix the problem that melted the Hemi on Day 1 of Hot Rod Drag Week 2022. Luckily, sharing info with Pete Harrel from Harrell Engine and Dyno and Robin Lawrence of Holley EFI made us realize that we had a fuel delivery issue and not just a half-empty fuel tank during our first pass at Drag Week, which is what made the engine lose fuel pressure and kill a piston and all of the rings. Not only do we change fuel pumps and fix the problem but we also show you a cheap and useful tool for mounting parts to sheetmetal that we are sure you’ll love. The post DISASTER AVERTED! Video: Upgrade Your Classic Mopar Steering With A New Borgeson Steering Box

Image
When it comes to enjoying a classic muscle car, looking at it is one thing but driving it is where the magic really is. That’s the good news. The bad news is that most really good classic muscle cars are over 50 years old now and many of them still have their factory steering boxes in them. They leak, they get sloppy, they are heavy as hell, and ultimately they are a key component to enjoying your time behind the wheel. Borgeson has been the industry leader in steering box replacements and upgrades for decades now and the Mopar community is a part of that fun as well. In this video we see a review of the Mopar box as given not by some slick influencer but by a guy who ponied up and bought one himself. His reasons are logical and straightforward. Firstly in one fell swoop he’s going to be taking 16lbs off the nose of the car, which is awesome. Add to that the fact that this is a bolt in, add to that the fact that it is a far quicker ratio box than the one coming out of the car, and fin

High Stakes 100: The Story Of The World’s Fastest Outboard Powered Boat Circa 1958

Image
The story of Mercury Marine is largely dominated by the larger than life man who founded the company, Carl Kiekhaefer. Known for being one of the most powerful early forces in NASCAR racing, his understanding of speed to sales translated to the water as well. By the time the late 1950s rolled around, it had been more than 20 years since America had the speed record for an outboard powered boat. While ol’ Karl was not necessarily angling for it actively, a couple of guys in the western part of the United States were convinced they had the people together to do the job but they needed the engine. The plan started to come together in 1957, a year after the chief engineer of Mercury Marine was tinkering with a high performance engine project in secret. Why in secret? Kiekhaefer wanted Charlie Strang concentrated on NASCAR development and NASCAR development only. Thankfully, boys will be boys. Strang was contacted by Jack Leek and Hugh Entrop of Washington State who told Strang that they

MAHLE Motorsport is the industry leader in high performance pistons across the board but the company has incredible abilities when it comes to modern, late model engines. Just take this video for example. This is a discussion about the Toyota B58 inline six that is found in the Supra and what the company has available in their PowerPak line. This video was made about a year ago and the fact is that what you hear about custom made pistons for this application back then means that they have loads of different tweaks and designs they have made for people since then. For such a large, global company, MAHLE has amazing abilities to make custom pistons to meet the needs of their customers. Whether you are looking for custom bore size, compression, and other tweaks, they can work with you, B58 or otherwise. W

COLOR Video From Alton Dragway Circa 1961 is Amazing – The Cars, The Starting System, More

Image
Now this is a jaw dropper.  Of course Alton Dragway was the scene of what’ll forever be among drag racing’s most controversial runs, the claimed 204mph shot by Chris Karamesines in 1960. It would be years later that Garlits would run 200 and get credit for the feat at Island Dragway. Connie Kalitta was the first man to run 200mph at an NHRA National event so he also likes to stake a part of the claim. The disputed run is not on this film but loads of others are. Dragsters, Jaguars, a killer Henry J and more are showed here. Alton Dragway still exists in the exact layout you see here. The only difference? The place is lined with mobile homes as it is now a neighborhood and the split lane drag strip now serves as the street that runs in front of the homes. Driving to the end of the “street” gets you a gate that blocks the area which served as the end of the shutdown area. If you never knew it was a race track in the first place you’d never know now but if you do know it was a track, thi

FE Race And Reunion Coverage: Our Final Gallery Of Photos From Beaver Springs Dragway

All things FE baby, that’s what the FE Race and Reunion is all about at Beaver Springs Dragway. Thanks to Joe Grippo we’ve got lots of photos from all over the event, so check out the final gallery right here! And if you missed our previous photos, use the link below. (Words and Photos by Joe Grippo) It’s been 10 years since the first FE Race and Reunion was held at Beaver Springs Dragway in Pennsylvania and, of course, BangShift was there. In fact, we have never missed featuring this event on the site. So here we are again, back at Beaver for the 10th annual FE Race and Reunion. Even though the last FE rolled out of the Ford Factory way back in the mid-seventies, the venerable engine has had quite a long life and a hardcore, dedicated fanbase. Look no further than these galleries from this event for the evidence. Three days of drag racing, a hardy swap meet, and a stout car show were the activities of the weekend. Add in a few FE luminaries of the past like Ohio George Montgomery a

Forgotten International Truck Cut From Woods After 53 Years! Will It Be Saved And Restored?

Image
When you find a vehicle that has started to become one with the woods, and you have decided that you need to save it, you have to know going in that it could be a battle. Not a fight, but an actual battle. It’s insane how strong vines and weeds and small trees can be when you are just trying to drag something back into the land of the living. I’ve actually had to remove body panels before in an effort to keep them from being ruined while removing the rest of the car. I’m not a fan of a Sawzall in the grand scheme of things, but when you need to take back a car from Mother Nature, then a Sawzall might just be your best friend. Don’t forget the brush and tree blades baby! Video Description: Now that the weather is beginning to cool off in Texas, the guys venture back out into the dense woods of the Hudson Farm in hopes to rescue out ANOTHER old forgotten International KB truck. This ol’ girl has been sitting abandoned for over 53 years so the team is unsure of what obstacles lie ahead

NMCA All-American Nationals Photo Coverage: More Amazing Drag Cars And Action!

We’ve got our seventh gallery of photos from Joe Grippo’s coverage of the NMCA All-American Nationals right here. (Words and Photos by Joe Grippo)  Ever been to an NMCA Event? If you haven’t, you should. Check out our coverage from the recently completed NMCA All-American Nationals held at America’s Dragstrip, Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Ohio. Along with the normal complement of NMCA classes there were also separate Cobra Jet Mustang and COPO Camaro shoot outs, featuring all the latest factory race cars and vintage examples from the golden age muscle era. A late model Hemi class was also contested and was stacked with the latest Drag Pak Challengers and SRT offerings. Another highlight for me was the F.A.S.T. group. F.A.S.T means Factory Appearing Stock Tire, the quick rundown on these cars is big inch engines that look concours correct wrapped in perfectly restored peak era muscle cars going mid 9’s on a tiny bias-ply tire. These cars seemingly defy physics, pretty mind blow

Car Feature: Original, Low Mileage 1978 Pontiac Trans Am In Martinique Blue, With Original Owners Order Notes! T-tops, Loaded!

Image
(Words and Video by Chad Ehrlich) A lot of the viewers have been wanting to see some of my personal collection. I had this Trans Am out recently, so I went ahead and did a quick video on it! This is a pretty cool car to me. I bought it from the family of the original owner and it has 46,000 actual miles on it. Locally, this car was kind of a “unicorn”. Most people in town remembered it, but no one had seen it in years. There were always rumors floating around in the local car circles about whether the car still existed or if it had been sold off and no one knew about it. The entire time, it had been sitting quietly, tucked away in its garage. In the late 2000s, the family got the car back out and went back through everything to make it roadworthy since the car had been sitting for close to 20 years at that point. A few years later, things changed and the family made the decision to sell the car. I had previously told the family that if they ever made the decision to sell the car, I

The Flyin’ Bolens Is A Turbine Powered Lawn Tractor Puller From Hell

Image
People may want to laugh at it, but the world of garden tractor pulling is deadly serious. There are engine builders who make their living on single and twin cylinder engines for these tractors that make stupid power and loads more torque than the factory engineers ever intended them to make. Like their larger brethren, garden tractor pullers use power, weight, and strategy to pull their scaled down sled for the most distance at events all across the country every weekend. It may look a little odd, but this is pretty serious business. How serious? This guy built a tractor with a freaking turbine engine in it! The “Flyin’ Bolens” employs a 160hp gas turbine engine that was used as some sort of power unit for a military generator. The shaft speed on this little turbine would be somewhere around 40,000 RPM before being send through a gear box that brings it down to more normal levels to spin the rear axle of the tractor. We’re not 100% sure if this thing is an exhibition rig or if there

Listen To A Hot Rodded 2.5L Mercury Marine V6 Scream To 10,500 RPM!

Image
I don’t know lots about boat racing, but when there is a “Formula One” class, I’m going to assume it is pretty serious business. From what I can gather about the engine that serves as the centerpiece of this video, it is a highly modified 2.5L Mercury Marine V6 used in the Formula class to power a racing boat. There is no mention as to the horsepower produced, but the sound of the warbling exhaust note at nearly 11,000 RPM can only be described as industrial. It sounds like no car engine on Earth, I can tell you that. I’m not sure but this may be the same engine type that hot rodders have laid down and used in Bonneville cars before. Cue hate mail calling me a moron in…3…2…1… So with the amount of RPM this thing is turning it must make some real HP. Again, from some light research we have done, the engine should be making close to 400hp and that is bad ass from a naturally aspirated six cylinder measuring out to about 160ci but not insane for a two stroke engine, we get that. The boa
