Finnegan’s Garage: FIXING THE BENT RAMP TRUCK FRAME, SMUGGLING BEER, AND RIDING A HOVERCRAFT IN THE SHOP

Image
It’s time for another update from Finnegan and the boys and this one is a good one. There is a ton going on, including the fact that they are moving into a new warehouse to store all their stuff and also working on Square Force 1. And they moved stuff. Like only Mike and Dave would do. Which we approve. Check it out. If you have missed any of the other Finnegan’s Garage videos we’ve posted, CLICK HERE Video Description: There’s a lot going on in Episode 180 of Mike Finnegan’s Garage. We are moving into a larger warehouse and that means we can finally have all of our junk under one roof. Before we moved out of the old spot, though, we had to have a little fun with our neighbors. We also had to get Square Force 1, our 1989 GMC Sierra crew cab ramp truck, fixed up so it could safely haul all of the cars to the new spot. Mike Howe of How’s it Doin Garage ( @howes_it_doin_garage) took the challenge of straightening the c-channel frame, adding new crossmembers, and then gusseting the chas

What Could Possibly Go Wrong? Buying A V8 Swapped Pinto Off Craigslist And Driving It 3,000 Miles Home!

Image
This is totally our jam! This is the kind of stuff we love to see and hear about. This is the kind of trip I’m all about and can’t wait to get back into. The gang at Fuzzy Dice Projects bought a V8 swapped Pinto project that they found on Craigslist. No big deal right? Except that they bought one located 3,000 miles from home. I mean cause why not right? So some folks might have a car purchase like this shipped home. Others might fly in and rent a truck and trailer to drive it back home. But the cool kids fly in and grab it and drive it home like a boss. Repairs, carnage, and more included. It’s fine! Check it out. This is just Part 1, and it is going to be fun. Video Description: What happens when you fly nearly all the way across the USA with your two best friends to buy a crappy project Pinto off of Craigslist and try to drive it back home? A lot, apparently. This is the single biggest adventure I have ever been on and we filmed nearly everything that happened along the way. This

Grand National Roadster Show 2022: Our Car Show Coverage Continues With More Rad Photos!

We’re going to have more and more photos all week long folks so here is your Monday installment from our awesome Grand National Roadster Show coverage. If you missed any of them so far, click the link below to check out what you missed. (Photos by Wes Allison) It’s the Grand National Roadster Show baby!!! One of the most iconic car shows in the world is going on right now at the Fairplex in Pomona and everyone that’s anyone is there. We were lucky enough to have Wes Allison on hand shooting photos of all the cars, trucks, hot rods, lowriders, muscle, and more that is inside the buildings, and he’s also going to be sending us photos from today’s outdoor car show as well! I grew up going to this show at the Oakland Coliseum, where it was affectionately referred to as the Oakland Roadster Show even though its real name was the Grand National. It moved to Pomona several years ago now and has been an absolute must-see and attend event that draws folks from all over the world. It also draw

LS Corvair Project: The Fab Work Continues! No Bolt-Ons Here.

Image
In this episode of the LS Swapped Corvair build, where the engine is still going to be in the rear as Chevrolet intended, the custom fabrication continues. It’s awesome to watch and we can’t wait to see this thing hauling ass! While I’ve heard of a few drivetrain swaps that practically bolt into other makes and models, that is not going to be the case when you are trying to put an LS4 into the back of a Corvair. These engines were in a front-wheel-drive application, with struts and steering and all kinds of other stuff that just wouldn’t be right in the rear of the Corvair. But the project is really starting to take shape and I know this one is going to be a hell of a cool ride when it’s all done. V8 Corvairs are cool, and I’ve seen several built over the years. Some are front-engine, some “mid” engine, but everyone I’ve ever seen has had the engine running in the right direction. This one here however is going a totally different route. And by different I mean transverse mounting th

Project Hay Hauler: The Rust Repair Continues, And Boy Is This Project Snowballing! Is It Getting Too Nice?

Image
Sometimes you start in on an already driving project, with the best intentions of just doing some minor stuff and getting it back on the road, only to end up falling down a rabbit hole of repairs that ends with a whole new engine build, or a complete rewire, or in the case of Project Hay Hauler the body coming off the chassis for rust repairs that just keep coming. To be fair, this truck had some serious swiss cheese going on, and the repairs could have been done “simpler” I suppose, but when you work in a hot rod and restoration shop like Scott does this is how things get done. We’ll keep you posted because this is the start of much more going on in this truck’s life, so stay tuned. If you missed any of the previous stories or video, use the link below. Project Hay Hauler has been a fun one to follow, but it has always been with photos and words rather than video. Well, that’s all changing now that Rebeldryver, aka Scott Liggett, is doing A BUNCH of rust repair on this thing. I have

FJ45 Rock Crawler Project: IT’S ALIVE!! The FJ45 Ultimate Rock Crawler STARTS UP, But Not Without A Few Hiccups!

Image
Why should it surprise us that the first startup on the FJ45 Rock Crawler project would be a little more exciting than it should be? I mean, everyone is excited when their new project starts for the first time but the kind of excitement can vary. Check it out. If you know old Toyota Land Cruisers then you know that an FJ40 is an iconic off-roader. Like a Jeep CJ, it’s a short wheelbase little utility ride that can be built into anything. The FJ60 on the other hand is the SUV wagon body style more like a Jeep Cherokee or Wagoneer. But there were all kinds of other FJ series vehicles that are much less common, and therefore sought after by Toyota Land Cruiser aficionados. One such ride is the FJ45 which is a pickup truck model. They are very hard to find and are usually in horrible shape if you do find one. So what do you think the Toyota crowd would think of taking a solid FJ45 and cutting it up to make the ultimate rock crawler? Well, you are about to find out. In this video series b

Are Old Forgotten Race Cars Like This Monza Worth Saving? Can It Live Another Day?

Image
Our friend, and BANGshift contributor, Tommy Lee Byrd is a car hunting machine. I mean seriously, he’s got two car related talents that separate him from the norm. First, he’s got an eye for cars that makes anything he touches look cool. Stance, wheels, and tires can make almost anything look cool and Tommy is great at all of them. His superpower is hunting cars though. He finds insanely cool stuff hidden, forgotten, and hoarded and we love him for it. This is one of them. This long-forgotten race car has been sitting all alone with no love for years, and it is the kind of thing that I would emotionally want to save. But is it worth saving? Is it artwork at this point? Or is it destined to live another day of racing? Check out the video. Video Description: How did I not know that this incredibly lightweight Chevy Monza drag car was sitting behind a garage that’s only 6 miles from my house. How is that possible? I sniff out drag cars from all over the place, yet this one was right un

Does Coolant Flush Really Work? Flying Sparks Garage Puts It Through The Paces

Image
As hot rodders and racers, we tend to focus on the things that make power and make things look cool, rather than paying attention to boring maintenance items. Sometimes that’s okay, but sometimes that comes back to bite you. And if we happen to find a potential project somewhere we tend to think about coolant only if the thing doesn’t stay cool. It’s a sad state of affairs, but it is true. In this video, you’ll see Emily and Aaron try out some Peak cooling system flush for the first time. It’s easy to wonder how good this stuff really is, but apparently the answer is REALLY GOOD because they were super impressed. I recently replaced the cooling system in two of my cars so I know they are clean, but now I want to find something that I can clean! The post Does Coolant Flush Really Work? No TIG Welder? No Problem, You Can Still Weld Sheet Metal Without One! Don’t Listen To Those That Say Otherwise

Image
In recent years there seem to be more and more internet snobs who talk about only welding sheet metal with a TIG welder if you are doing any sheet metal work on your project car. I know, and understand, the reason for this opinion, but it isn’t like you can’t weld without one. So if you only have a MIG welder then go right ahead and get your weld on. Or if you only have a set of torches, gas weld that stuff! There are multiple ways to do it and you can use any welding method pretty successfully if you just pay attention and do some practicing. Would I ARC, or stick weld, body panels? Not unless I had to! LOL but that’s not to say someone out there isn’t good enough to do it. So watch this video from Eastwood and see what their tips and trips are for MIG welding sheet metal on your project car and let us know what you think. The post No TIG Welder? The Backup Girls Of 2021: The Southeast Gassers Show Off Their Best.

Image
The Southeast Gassers Association is one of the coolest racing organizations in the country. They have period correct cars, with all the flare that you want out of them, and the racing just happens to be awesome as well. They are true showmen who are shifting gears with the wheels up, doing giant burnouts, and dry hops galore. And did we mention that they have backup girls? Yep, these lovely ladies are out there backing up the racers, pulling them into the beams, and helping them put on a show. If you haven’t been to a SEGA event, then you absolutely need to put it on your list for 2022 as this season will be great. In this video they are highlighting all the ladies who dress up and get out there in front of the race cars as the backup girls of the Southeast Gassers Association, and all in honor of one particular backup girl. This video is dedicated to Cynthia Darlene Phillips, The Original SEGA “Back Up Girl”.   The post The Backup Girls Of 2021: The Southeast Gassers Show Off Th

2022 Kentucky Invitational Finals! Super Modified 2WD Truck Pulling At The TNT Truck & Tractor Pull

Image
If you have never been to a truck and tractor pull then you really are missing out on something. They are way different than anything else you’ll see racing, but there is something about them that is just awe-inspiring. There are a bunch of classes for trucks, tractors, and stuff that just looks sorta like trucks and tractors. Some of my favorites are Super Modified 4WD and 2WD trucks and this batch of 2WD beasts from the Kentucky Invitational Finals is fun to watch. Check out the action from the 2022 TNT Truck & Tractor Pulling Kentucky Invitational at Alltech Arena in Lexington, KY. Oh, and watch the crowd every time one of these things makes a hit. It will get you laughing. It’s the wheels up passes that will have you mesmerized though because these are some serious beasts right here. The post 2022 Kentucky Invitational Finals! Iron Trap’s 1939 Mercury Is Alive And Running Better Than Ever Before!

Image
This ’39 Mercury has fought Matt and the gang every step of the way, but it finally got a new to it engine. After saving it from an old garage, where it had been all but forgotten for decades, their attempts to get it back running just kept failing. No matter what they did it would not run and finally, Matt threw in the towel and decided that another engine was in order. When they started to pull this old engine from the Mercury it became apparent that there was more going on with this thing than Matt realized. Thank god they went with a new engine. And it sounds bitchin! In this episode, you’ll see that engine fully installed and see this awesome find finally run like it deserves! Mooneyes New Year’s Party: Our Final Gallery Of Hot Rods And Customs Is Right Here!

Our last batch of photos from the show is right here! (Photos by Wes Allison) Our photo coverage from the Mooneyes New Year’s Party Car Show and Drag Races is just getting wound up. We have a bunch of great photos thanks to Wes Allison, and we are excited to share them with all of you. We’ve already posted a few galleries, and have many more coming. Don’t worry, if you miss any of them you can just use the link below to check them all out. Up through 2018, every Southern California hot rodder could be found at Irwindale Speedway in early December for the Mooneyes X-Mas Party and Drags. It was one of the staple events that you couldn’t help but have fun at, and even through all the ownership changes and supposed closures of the race track, the show kept on. But then it all stopped after 2018’s show. So you can imagine how excited everyone was to hear that they were bringing back the show, but with a slightly different date, and a new name befitting of the date change. Welcome to the M

Meet The Testang: This Tesla Powered Mustang Hauls Some Ass!

Image
EV conversions are gaining popularity, and with no shortage of vintage iron out there, the possibilities are endless! But what if you want to drive your project daily, or compete with it at track events? That’s typically where the limitations of electronic controls for EV conversions rear their head. That ends now, thanks to AEM EV. In this video, engineer Nate Stewart details the build for the Testang, a 2007 Ford Mustang GT with a Tesla Base Drive LDU swap that was originally developed as a testbed and has evolved for duty at the dragstrip, the autocross course, and daily driving on the streets of southern California. This car is certified with the CA DMV as an electric vehicle and is 100% street legal. AEM EV’s Tesla Inverter Control Board acts as a VCU expansion device that replaces the stock Tesla ICB. Once connected to a VCU200 using the supplied communications harness, calibrators can program propulsion strategies and characterize inputs through the VCU using AEMcal software.

Grand National Roadster Show 2022: Here Are Photos Of All The Contenders For America’s Most Beautiful Roadster! AMBR

Image
America’s Most Beautiful Roadster is a title given to just one roadster per year and is considered one of the two highest hot rod award honors in the world. Given out at the Grand National Roadster Show in Pomona California, an event that originally started up north in Oakland, there are a select few cars that each year enter to be considered for the AMBR award. It’s like an Oscar, only harder to win and there aren’t different ones for different classes. There is just one. Roadsters, of all kinds, compete against each other to be named the most beautiful roadster in all of America for that given year. The budgets for these builds can vary wildly, but the most expensive of them have price tags in the seven-figure range for their builds. Regardless of the price, being up for the competition is something to be proud of on its own. Below you’ll find all of the contenders for 2022’s America’s Most Beautiful Roadster, and a gallery full of images of all of them below that. Enjoy! The Cusey

Historic Video: Watch Jerry Titus In A GT350 Battle Mark Donohue In A Camaro At The 1968 24 Hours Of Daytona

Anyone who picks up a pen or taps keys about cars and also harbors dreams of being a proficient racing driver owes Jerry Titus a whole lot. Titus was one of the few automotive journalists that could actually wheel a race car on a professional level. We’re not talking about showing up, being a back marker, and then going out drinking with the winners as a member of the boy’s club. We’re talking about a guy who could match skills, especially in Trans-Am cars with the best names of his day. He won in multiple series and unfortunately died as a result of injuries sustained in a 1970 Trans Am race at Road America. In a sad irony, the man he raced so hard in this video, Mark Donohue would also lose his life to a racing crash and a head injury a few years later. But back to happier times. It was 1968. Titus was in a Shelby team prepared Mustang GT350 and Donohue was in the familiar blue and gold painted Camaro Z/28 that he had hammered to three Trans-Am victories in 1967 and which was poised

Watch An 828ci Ford Mountain Motor Pro Stock Engine Turn 9,000 RPM And Make Almost 2,000 NA Horsepower On The Dyno!

Mountain motor pro stock is a class for true gearheads to revel at. The engines are literal monsters coming in at over 820ci and they churn out close to 2,000 hp (depending on atmospheric conditions) without the help of a blower, nitrous, or exotic fuels. The huge engines turn serious RPMs for their size. As you’ll see in this video, 9,000+ is where they live at the top end of the course. I was lucky enough to be one of the announcers when the 6.20 barrier was broken with these cars several moons ago. They have since gotten way lighter, faster, and more advanced. The competition is still just as close, though. The major difference between the attitude of the big 800ci pro stocks and the NHRA 500ci cars is pretty simple. I remember talking to one time IHRA (and later NHRA) pro stock phenom about the cars and he told me that the big motor cars pull as hard or harder in every gear down the track as they do on the launch. The 500ci cars leave like their hair is on fire but once you shift

One Bad Launch: Watch This Motorcycle Drag Racer In Bolivia Take Out The Scoreboard, The Tree, and Nearly The Starter! DOH!

Image
We have seen some rough launches at the drag strip before but when a guy on a motorcycle can take out the tree, the scoreboards, and nearly kill the starter all in one fell swoop, that’s a new one for us. In this case we travel to La Paz, Bolivia and we’re at what appears to be an organized drag racing event being held on the street. We’re going way out on a limb here to suggest that this is “legal” street racing because they have a tree, and the digital scoreboard hung on a ladder. There are a few people looking on and the road seems to indicate that this is a regular spot for racing to take place, judging by the marks and rubber on the road. There’s an initial problem with the tree that delays the launch and then, as the starter is turned with his back toward the motorcycles, the tree fires and the dude in the right line instantly reminds us why we cannot have nice things. As the tail of the motorcycle misses the starter and his computer by about an inch, the Christmas Tree and the

Good Ol’ Charlie Brown: Watch Mike Boyles’ 283ci 4-speed 1957 Chevy Wagon Clean House In IHRA Super Stock

Image
There are cars in drag racing that just seem to lead charmed lives. They are lovingly cared for by their owners, they win races all the time, and they just seem completely timeless. Such is the case with the car featured in this video. The Good Ol’ Charlie Brown 1957 Chevrolet station wagon was and continues to be a legendary machine in the history of IHRA drag racing. The owner and driver Mike Boyles fits the same bill because at this point in history he was winning his 7th career super stock world title and he wasn’t done yet. To us, the best part of this whole deal is the fact that this car is ancient, even by the standards of the 1990s. Guys were competing against him in stuff that was way more whiz-bang current and they just could not stop the guy. If there is anything that the car and driver combo proves here its that a great driver in a well maintained car can overcome a whole lot. Just think of this guy destroying people with a little 283 and a four speed on leaf springs! So g

The American Powertrain Parting Shift: Second-Gear Air With a Jerico Four-Speed!

Image
As we wrestle through another BangShify “work” week,  we’re going to give you our traditional “Parting Shift” blog item today and it’s a dandy. This time we’re looking at a late 1970s Chevy Monte Carlo with a Jerico four speed, a 408ci small block Chevy, a propensity to rev, and second gear air, baby! Tonight at the Throwdown at T-Town you’ll see pro mods and other insane cars assault the strip in Tulsa and we’re not sure you’ll see any gear jamming action so that’s why we figured we’d give you this last shot in the manual shifting arm for the week. We have both in-car and out of car video of this Monte making a run and both of the videos rule for their own reasons. We’d recommend watching the in-car first and then watching the car itself get to work. You don’t have to like G-Bodies or even Chevrolets to enjoy this because the dude is a ninja with a shifter and the car sounds all kinds of bad ass revved to the moon! First we have the in-car, then scroll down for a view of the overal

Is 1990s F1 Noise The Best F1 Noise? Listen To This 3.5L V10 Williams FW15 Attack Goodwood and Prove Us Wrong!

Image
If there is one thing that defined Formula One for a generation of people like me when I was a kid, it was the sound. These were the race cars that sounded like none other. I could hear small engines making some noise on road courses in America when I watched IMSA or IndyCar/CART but damn, these things were otherworldly. I’ll be honest, when I was a kid it took a second to embrace that sound. An ear piercing kind of noise that just didn’t seem to be capable of coming from an internal combustion engine. There’s a reason for that and it was the fact that I never knew one could rev to about 20,000 RPM and not have parts hitting the Sea of Tranquility when they fell down. Therefore with that statement and those memories, I am going to declare that the 1990s had the best sounding Formula One cars in my lifetime. The 3.5L V10 in this car made something like 780hp naturally aspirated and yes, it was turning 20,000(wish) RPM during its heyday. Damon Hill is in the car for this trip up the lan

SMASH: The Story Of The Neatest Photo You’ll See Anywhere Today – Big Rig Killing Classic Caddy!

Image
If you have been reading BangShift for any length of time, you know that I am obsessed with digging up these little nuggets of greatness that have been stored away in my memory banks and occasionally bubble to the surface. Remember a few years ago when a 1959 Chevy was crashed into a 2009 Chevy and the world recoiled in horror when the big old ‘Chevy folded up like a wet napkin made of jagged steel? Never mind that the test was chock full of bogus stuff and key in on that public reaction. It came from all corners, old cars are death traps! New cars are amazing! Yadda, yadda, yadda. The fact is, junk like that test has been happening for decades on end in order to advance someone’s agenda in one way or another. In 1964 a similar stunt was pulled, but this time it was different. There was a counter stunt that proved how inane and simply dumb the first event was. It involved a Connecticut Police Commissioner and a plucky car dealer from Texas who wasn’t going to let a crusading copper qua

Hand Painted Hot Rod Truck Doors: Pinstriping, Lettering & Silver Leaf

Image
Hand lettering and pinstriping is a true art and the folks that do it well are really fun to watch. I’ve got a few friends who are incredibly talented, and have been lucky enough to watch them work on occasion. In this video below you’ll see a young lady named HotRod Jen lettering and striping a door on a hot rod Chevy pickup, The work is clean and cool and even includes turned silver leaf! But painting up a door logo is more than just putting paint on a brush, it’s also about the layout and design which has to be right before any of the painting begins, and you are going to see all of it in this video below. From start to finish, this piece comes together and makes you want to have some custom stripe and lettering done on your own ride, or at least it does for me! Easy Step by Step! How To Paint Interior Plastic, Vinyl, & Leather.

Image
Whether you have a new project that needs some interior love, or you’ve gone to the wrecking yard in pursuit of some interior parts for your project, it always sucks when you find the right parts but in the wrong color. Or that original part is now faded, scratched, and haggard. I’ve always been hesitant to take parts and paint them because it seems like that never lasts. But in this video from Shop Tool Reviews you’ll see how to do it the right way. And boy does it look nice. I’m not going to hesitate to do this on my next interior project. Video Description: We show you how to paint interior plastic, vinyl, and leather. The center console in our 2003 Shop Truck build was in rough shape, so it’s a great testbed for painting the plastic. There are some tips that must be adhered to in order to see great and lasting results. By following a few rules, adding a few hours of labor, and a can or two of Vinyl & Fabric paint, you can make a huge difference in the way your interior looks.

Summernats 34: Day 5 Of Australia’s Ultimate Horsepower Celebration

Image
Day 5 action from Summernats 2022 is right here, and if you missed Day 4 use the link below to check it out! Every single hot rodder on the planet knows about Summernats and there isn’t anyone out there who doesn’t think this event would be cool as hell to attend. And why not, it’s got cruising, burnouts, dyno sessions, car show, burnouts, and did we mention burnouts? This is one of the biggest shows in the world and there is no doubt that the Aussies are as die-hard as they come. Just watch all the action, and all the spectators, that are getting up close and personal with all the action this year. The Street Machine TV crew were on hand for all of Summernats 34 and their action-packed videos really got rolling with Day 3’s tire-smoking action. What we love about Summernats is not only the shear scale of this event and how intense the action is, but the variety of activities. We’re talking about a show that has indoor and outdoor car shows, and a bunch of loud and exciting action a

Glorious Failure Video: This Film Documents NASA Space Shuttle Main Engine Test Failures – They Blew Up A LOT Of Stuff!

Image
The old expression, “If you want to make an omelette, you’ve got to break a few eggs,” has never been illustrated more clearly than it is in this video. You are going to watch a bunch of failed NASA rocket engine tests from the 1960s. These tests were being performed on the RS-25 rocket engine that was planned to be the main engine of the space shuttle program. As we all know, that program had its share of tragedy over the years as well. Thankfully in this video there’s no tragedy outside of the mechanical ones you are going to watch. Perhaps the most telling part of this video for us is that there’s a billion ways to fail at building a rocket and only one way to make it work right. The difficulty of doing what the greatest minds in the world at that time were trying to do cannot be overstated. Here’s an excerpt from the history of this rocket engine family:  Designed and manufactured in the United States by Rocketdyne (later known as Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne and Aerojet Rocke

Video: Watch Aussie Legend Peter Brock Drive Bathurst With One Hand At Full Bore – Transmission Trouble!

Image
We have talked a lot over the years about Australian racing legend Peter Brock. The guy dominated races at Bathurst and was one of the most famous people in the country for decades before his untimely death in a racing accident during an event in 2006. Known as the “King of the Mountain” because of his Bathurst domination, he had a career with big time backing from manufacturers, big sponsors, and lots of racing wins. The sponsorships helped but it was his skill and guts that propelled him to those victories. This video shows some of that in a playful but kind of stunning way. We have showed you in-car video of Peter Brock before but this is the first time we have showed THIS in-car video. What you are going to see is Brock ripping around Bathurst and talking with fellow competitor Allan Moffat. Moffat was knocked out of the race by engine problems and they must have brought him in the booth to do color. When we drop in on Brock we can see him tooling around with one hand one the shif

Watch This Mighty 1971 McLaren M8F Destroy The Quick Time Of The Day At Goodwood A Couple Years Back

Image
When we talk about the history and evolution of the legendary Can-Am series of road racing, what we have to really make as a line is the era before the Porsche 917 and then the era after the Posche 917 because that one car changed the whole deal. Before the 917 arrived on the scene, the McLaren M8 series of cars (which had debuted in 1968) were the dominating force in the series. They won championships for four years straight (1968-1972) and even they could not stop the beastly creation from Germany that arrived on the scene and just flattened everyone. This car has an all-aluminum 488ci big block Chevy engine and the sound it makes in this video is verging on the pornographic. The MP in the MP 250i stands for Multi Process and that means this machine can MIG and TIG which comes in real handy when Ryan uses the MIG function to tack the fender in place and then grinds his mig welds smooth and comes back to TIG weld the entire perimeter to complete the inst
