American Truck Historical Society Show Coverage! Classic Trucks Of Every Shape And Size!

(Words and Photos by Jim Hrody) For 2022, the American Truck Historical Society hosted it’s annual convention & truck show at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield, Illinois. Trucks of all sizes and eras were distributed throughout the grounds, roughly a thousand of them. Even a few farm tractors snuck in under the guise of flatbed cargo.

As to be expected, all current truck brands were well represented. But wasn’t expecting the relatively high count of the dead brands such as Hendrickson, Marmon, Diamond Reo, Diamond T, and even a few Studebakers. In the words of Snowman in Smokey and the Bandit II— “Well, then I must be commode-hangin’ drunk, cuz I see a ton of trucks”

Cool Animation: Take A Look At This Comprehensive Layout Of The Triple Expansion Steam Engines On The Titanic

One of my sons is into the Titanic disaster these days and he has been scarfing up books and stories about the ship and the icy end that befell it. One of the things we have been working through are the engines that powered the behemoth through the water. These massive steam engines were of the triple expansion type and what that means is that they used the same steam three times in three consecutive cylinders. Each cylinder different from the one before to harness as much energy as possible from the ever cooling steam. He was interested in the idea of the steam engine using a condenser in order to effectively create a “closed loop” system for the water being used in the boilers. Happy 4/10! No We’re Not Talking Sprint Car Engines, Rather A Pair Of Forgotten Oldies From The MEL and FE Families

We’re here with a pair of blue oval products that were both short-lived and while of the same displacement they were not related at all. Interestingly Ford produced a 410ci of the MEL engine and then nearly a decade later they produced a 410ci of the FE big block series. The first 410 we’ll look at is the MEL engine which was produced to power the Edsel Corsair and Citation models. It was only used in those two cars and as best we can tell, it was only used for that model year. Most people know the much larger versions of the engine which went up to 430ci and then the biggest which was 462ci at its peak. The MEL 410 was a runner with 345hp and over 400 lb/ft of torque at its disposal. That horsepower and torque came in handy to move the large and heavy cars down the road. Hot rodders flirted with the MEL engines of the time and if you can believe it there were some dragsters that ran them and C-T strokers actually produced a kit to take one out to 500ci in the 1960s.
