DIRT CHEAP Square Body – $500 Trucks Are Still Out There! But Is It Worth It?

Tommy Lee Byrd has found some pretty amazing finds in his time, and some rough rides as well. Several of these rough rides he’s turned into something cool, and several with just a few well-placed changes. But can he make this $500 C10 into something special without replacing most of it? This one is rough, but is it rougher than he’s had before? Is it worth saving?

But is this $500 SQUAREBODY C10 worth saving??? That’s the real question with this previously abandoned 1973 Chevrolet C10 short bed truck. Squarebody trucks are insanely hot right now and this one popped up on Marketplace a while back and I couldn’t pass it up for $500. It’s one of the rustiest vehicles I’ve ever owned and the engine looks likes it has sat under water for the last 20 years. I don’t know the last time this truck has run, but it will definitely be a challenge to make something out of it.

I’ve accumulated quite a few projects lately, giving some credence to the “Hot Rod Hoarder” name. I think I’ve reached my limit, but I felt like a $500 squarebody is hard to pass up. I love these round headlight square body trucks, especially when they look like a pawpaw truck. The green paint, dog dish caps and camper top is my favorite. As much as I’d like to save this thing, it might be a little too rusty.

Great Video: Watch This Massive Diesel Powered Portable Air Compressor Restoration (Part 1)

Portable may be a little bit of a stretch here, but hey, the thing is on wheels and the restorer rolls it into position. Yeah, we know. You could consider the compressors on a trailer and other as “portable” as well but we have never seen a hand roller style compressor this freaking big before. The engine sitting above the air tanks is a 1.5L single cylinder diesel and the compressor itself has three cylinders. This is a big unit and it’s really fun to see this first part of the process where the whole thing is pulled apart and the compressor end of things is brought back to life. The compressor uses a single throw crank with the three rods hanging off of it like a little version of a large radial engine. The Sweetheart Roadster is just one of the cool projects that are being built by the Iron Trap Garage crew, and there has been a lot of metal work going on to get it looking like a complete car again. Now it’s time for some customization to happen in the dash, not only with the layout of the gauges but also molding the dash into the doors.
