Visions Of The Future Past: The Porsche 911 S/C Is The True Definition Of A German Factory Hot Rod

(By Tom Lohnes) – Porsche is known for many things. Their deep and impressive racing history, their record-breaking acceleration figures on some of their newer cars, and being the only sports car manufacturer to actually pull off a decent all-around SUV. But, out of all, they are known for their driver’s cars. Cars like the 911 R, GT3/GT3 Touring, and Cayman GT4. These cars aren’t the fastest, nor most efficient, or the cheapest cars in the lineup, but they deliver a joy unrivaled by the others. Well, there’s a new addition to the Porsche driver’s car fleet, and it’s called Sport Classic.

Distinguished by a giant ducktail spoiler on the back and two spaced-out center exhaust tips, the Sport Classic seems to be a masterpiece of a car. Based on the Turbo S, the Sport Classic is powered by a 3.7-liter twin-turbocharged Flat-6 that is detuned top 543 horsepower for good reason. The reason? Well, unlike the heavy Turbo, the S/C is RWD, and is exclusively available with a 7-speed manual transmission. Yes, this is surprisingly the sole manual-only offering in the 911 lineup. Inside, the S/C gets houndstooth cloth seats, wood trim, and all of the lightweight options standard. Also, the shifter gets a nice wood-trimmed accent to commemorate the racecars of old. Nice.

Now, like any normal human, you would be probably wondering what the point of the S/C is when the 911 GTS exists? Well, although they follow the same formula, the S/C is drastically better. It uses the bigger, torquier engine from the Turbo models, has all of the optional equipment of the GTS as standard, and has shorter gearing in the manual to make driving more fun. Plus, it’s a numbered car.

Porsche plans to only produce 1,250 992 Sport Classica, and they’re probably all sold out to seasoned Porsche collectors. We don’t know the price or really any details, but Porsche usually tends to produce more cars then they claim, so there may be a few more available to snag towards the end of the production run.
