Since today is 3/27  we thought it was only right that we honor the diligent little 327 small block Chevy. The 327 arrived on the scene in 1962 and over the years there were a bunch of different versions. Millions of them powered Chevy trucks in “high torque” form with camshaft grinds far more suited to the low end grunt necessary for the yeoman work that trucks were designed for. In cars, there were economical, low horsepower, small carb equipped 327s that pushed stripper sedans around but the most BangShifty versions of the engine were found in machines like the Corvette and Chevy II. The 327 is one of those engines that has built a strong heritage in both the muscle car world and the drag racing world over the years. I have not met many no-joke household name racers. I’ve met plenty of racing drivers, don’t get me wrong. Many of whom grind it out at tracks whenever they get the chance. But when it comes to no-joke racers that you could ask anyone’s uncle about and there’s a better-than-50% chance they know their name, the list is small. I’ve met Big Chief, Murder Nova, Daddy Dave, Doc, and AZN from Street Outlaws. I had the privilege of chatting with Travis Pastrana one morning in a hotel parking lot before the 2010 Olympus Rally. And I’ve been able to chat with this man, Randy Pobst. Randy is one of those perpetually nice gentlemen, always happy to meet a fan. I knew his name from when he was driving for Honda in the North American Touring Car Championship races of 1996-1997, and I’m glad to see that he’s continued to have fun in whatever he’s been a part of, from racing in the 24 Hours of Daytona to his time hosting an informative show for MotorTrend a few years back. (Words by Jim McIlvaine) Joe Nemechek’s NASCAR career has spanned 24 years and he has turned more than 10,000 race laps at Charlotte Motor Speedway, including hundreds of race laps on the roval. We mention that, because Nemechek has been running races in the SVRA series in recent years and recently ran the roval at Charlotte during the same Speedtour weekend that also hosted OPTIMA’s Search for the Ultimate Street Car, presented by Advance Auto Parts. When Grant Guthrie put together this awesome C10 truck dubbed Warpath, I’m pretty sure even he didn’t realize how much of a bad ass it would be right out of the box. So when he asked Lyle Barnett to come out and drive it at Lights Out 13 in the No Time shootout, I’m sure he wasn’t expecting Peter Harrell to make this thing click so quickly. But Pete and Lyle are a pretty bad ass team, and they put on a clinic on how to come out of the box with a new truck. We’ve shared several videos from the Pakistani truck channel and more here at BANGshift because there is some serious ingenuity that goes on with some of their manufacturing. Think here in America 80 plus years ago, and you’ll understand. They do a lot with a little, recycle tons of materials, and have some serious skills. In this video you are going to see them making fifth-wheel hitch plates for big trucks using recycled plate steel from ship hulls. They use a template to mark the material with chalk, flame cut it, then use a template to put reference marks on it for the presses. Then stuff starts to get real.
